Looking for scholarships or grants for recovering addicts/single mom!

I’ve been browsing sites for weeks. Looking for legitimate help through school. There has to be something out there. Washington state or united states spectrum. I would like to ideally not leave college in debt. Being a single mom is tough. Any pointers or direction is appreciated. I know that nothing is free, but I might as well try all of my resources! Thanks in advance!

Hi–I don’t know about the recovering addict angle for financing, but kudos for you for staying clean. Keep up the good work.

Many women’s colleges do have special admission policies and financing for women who have had to take breaks in their educations. Look for example at these programs –

Smith College, Ada Comstock Program – https://www.smith.edu/admission-aid/how-apply/ada-comstock-scholars
Mt. Holyoke College, Frances Perkins Program – https://www.mtholyoke.edu/fp
Bryn Mawr, McBride Scholars – https://www.brynmawr.edu/admissions/mcbride-scholars
Agnes Scott – nontraditional students and transfer – https://agnesscott.edu/admission/transfer-nontraditional-students/index.html
Simmons – http://www.simmons.edu/admission-and-financial-aid/undergraduate-admission/for-students-over-24
Hollins – https://www.hollins.edu/admission/adult-horizon-students/

Tufts is coed and has programs – https://students.tufts.edu/academic-advice-and-support/real-program

Many many colleges offer programs for nontraditional students. The question is whether they also have financing for them. Start with the above list and see if any are suitable for you. But also google and to see what that school may offer.

Best of luck to you.

Have you talked to a financial aid officer of the college you hope to attend?

They probably have a list of resources to get you started. For example filing FAFSA, scholarship deadlines, agencies that might provide childcare subsidies for when you are in class, etc.

Is there an office of vocational rehabilitation near you, maybe they have some resources they can point you to?

Thanks guys! I have been sober for almost 2 years and been in school 2 semesters now and as a single mom have a hard time balancing work and school and kids without family ! I have already taken out loans and just do not want to go down that path continuously! I will check out the treatment centers and see what they know!

Look to local community organizations like the YWCA. They often have small scholarships and may also be able to provide other targets for your search.

Ran across the following website during my search for study abroad scholarships for my D:

Good luck!
