Helping a friend come up with a few more schools to add to the list for her rising senior.
Looking for schools that give significant merit aid. Aid that brings the school close to the cost of a UCalifornia. ~30000 per year or prefer less.
Schools they really like- Oberlin, Middlebury and American. Since Middlebury doesn’t give merit it should be off the list. So looking for similar schools that give large merit awards.
Must haves- higher level Chinese. Prefer over 2500 students. Other interests International studies.
SAT 2100 gpa 3.4

Did you check the thread over in the financial aid area for automatic full tuition/full ride scholarships? That might be a good place to start.

I did. There are already a few large OOS public schools on the list.
I am hoping to give them some smaller schools with the feel of the three listed schools. Small universities or liberal arts colleges.

Take a look at this student’s experience. Her GPA was considerably higher, though.

If the applicant is female, I’d add Smith & Mt. Holyoke.

Tulane

Hong Kong University?

Offers Chinese History and Culture and Chinese Language and Literature majors:
http://www.als.hku.hk/admission/intl/admission/admissionHK2/proginfo

Cost for international students is about US$26,000 per year:
http://www.als.hku.hk/admission/intl/admission/admissionHK4

University of Puget Sound? They give good merit aid and have a big Asian Studies program. Even with merit will likely be over $30 tho.

@mom60: You might consider Grinnell. It has a full major in Chinese language and culture: <a href=“Chinese and Japanese | Grinnell College”>https://www.grinnell.edu/academics/areas/chinese-japanese. It is known for providing ample need-based aid and also offers some merit scholarships: https://www.grinnell.edu/about/offices-services/admission/finances/scholarships-fellowships?group=22711

I’ve never visited the college but know a number of Grinnell grads, and they speak well of and for that college.

@mom60 – also see the thread “Schools Known for Good Merit Aid”: <a href=“Schools known for good merit aid - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/52133-schools-known-for-good-merit-aid-p1.html. Grinnell is one of the schools mentioned.

Based on the stated stats, it sounds as if Grinnell would be a big reach for this kid, which makes it unlikely that merit would be forthcoming.

Willamette gives good merit aid, has pretty good Chinese and is the right size.

My D has identical stats (2100 SAT, 3.4UW). With an EFC of about 25,000$ this year with 2 in college and I am sure going up to full pay next year when her sister graduates, merit was important to us to make sure the cost did not go too high for years 2,3 &4.

These schools came in around the same cost as the UCs:
Lawrence
Mills
Willamette
(Lawrence and Willamette look like they may have high level Chinese?)

Puget Sound only gave $14,000 in merit, which was not enough to make it affordable to us.

Thank you. Keep them coming.
Emmasmom- those are some good suggestions that I hadn’t thought of.
Student is a “he”.

New College of Florida has a Chinese Language and Culture major. My son is going there next year, and it will cost less than our own state colleges. They are a public college, and offer automatic merit scholarships. It is small, and rather eccentric, but offer lots of opportunities for independent study and travel. The cost of attendance for next year is about $25k.
