Looking for small, academically intense LACs to transfer to

I’m looking for a small LAC that’s academically rigorous( serious students, professors have high expectations) I’d prefer a place where seminars are used a lot( I love the Socratic discussion method)

So far Reed is the only school on my list. I have a 3.4 GPA.

Bryn Mawr is a women’s college that might provide what you’re looking for.

Intended major?

That was my first thought too, but transfers have to start over and do the whole four years.

Thomas Aquinas is another Great Books school, and they have the same policy.

Philosophy

Smaller colleges such as Amherst, Bates, Carleton, CMC, Colby, Hamilton, Haverford, Macalester, Oberlin, Smith and Williams appear in this site:

Most would appear to be reaches, but a few may be within range.

Well, that’s good to know; thanks for pointing that out!

Oh, also moot since OP’s other thread reveals that St. John’s is where they’re looking to transfer from…!

Oops! (It would have been helpful if the OP had revealed that upfront in THIS thread.)

Although maybe some time away might give the OP some pause in the transfer process – “Absence makes the heart grow fonder,” right?

An upper division transfer student in Philosophy is likely to have small, discussion-based classes even at a a larger university. ASU Barrett could be a great option, but they typically want to see a 3.6+.

How about Hampshire College? You’d have their ultra-flexible curriculum, but also be able to take upper division philosophy classes at UMass Amherst, Amherst College, Smith, and Mt. Holyoke.

Kalamazoo and Earlham could be worth a look if you want small and non-consortium.

Consider Bard.

Seconding Earlham and BMC.
