Looking for some safeties...

Hi everyone

Like most people, I’m just fine in selecting my reaches : )
However, realistically speaking, they are my reaches and probably won’t get into all that many of 'em.
So, can anyone recommend some backup schools for me?

Here’s a rough outline of my stats:

International student

Half URM

Oldest of 5

Will NOT ask for financial aid

Full IB Diploma candidate (currently predicted at 37 out of 42)

3.6 UW GPA/4.5 W GPA

Based on several prep tests, SAT 2100-2200

SAT II Spanish 710, German 750 (might take US History)

For an intl, excellent ECs (lot’s of leadership exp., pres of SC, founder of MUN)

May be recruited to play DIII sport

Predict excellent essays

Predict very good to excellent recommendations

Here’s what I’m looking for:

Small to medium sized school (no bigger than 10,000)

Liberal to very liberal atmosphere

“Real campus feel” very important

No “pretentious” overall student body. Inspired by a recent thread on here.

Preferably not a big party school

Somewhere in the Northeast, upper midwest, or West Coast. Nowhere in the south please.

Good career services center

Preferably near a large city. As in, less than an hour away. But if you have a school in mind that isn’t, go ahead and recommend it anyway.

Possibility of a double major is easy.

International relations and archaeology or architecture departments.

Thanks a lot! I’ll return the favor!

Lawrence University is in a small city on a river with a large international population, excellent academics, small classes, unpretentious students, DIII sports including fencing, independent studies, distinct campus, lots going on. My son was full IB, all his life overseas, URM. He is in his last year and loves it. For him it became his first choice and he in the end had lots of choices. Oh, and the airport is right down the road with good connections through either Detroit, Chicago or Minneapolis.

if you tell us your reaches, we can suggest some similar safer schools

ah yea, that might be a good idea.

for reaches/matches i’ve got:

 • brown
 • upenn
 • (maybe) stanford
 • wellesley
 • tufts
 • claremont mckenna

and thanks overseas! i’ll take a look at lawrence!

If you’re willing to consider the South, Duke has a great IR program. I also second Tufts and Claremont McKenna.

If you’d consider the midwest, Beloit College, in Wisconsin, has a top notch archeology program. They are number two (beyond Bryn Mawr) in terms of percentage of students going on to anthro/archeology doctorates. Their facilities and field studies opportunities are quite good as well – they even have an archeology museum on campus: [Logan Museum of Anthropology](Logan Museum of Anthropology • Beloit College) Not only a safety, but a good bet for merit money as well (even though you won’t need it).

In the northeast, Boston U would be a safer match. Syracuse U would be even safer.

I think you should consider the following schools:

Reach: Haverford College (Archaeology; Peace & Conflict Studies program; Growth and Structure of Cities majors; just outside Philadelphia; lots of sports options; liberal) I know you don’t need anymore reaches, but it seems like a perfect fit with virtually everything you want…

Match: Bryn Mawr College (same majors as above; Haverford & Bryn Mawr allow students to major at either school), Macalester College

Safety: Lewis and Clark, Lawrence

Bryn Mawr is a women’s college in Pennsylvania with programs in archaeology and international studies.

sorry about the late reply, but my internet got cut off for a few days : /
anyway, thanks for the replies! ill take a look at those schools
