Looking for the Ideal College

I’m going to be straight with everyone first thing: I don’t want to go to college for the education

The main reason why I want to go to college is mainly because I want to network, socialize, and get out of this town of which I live. However, that being said, I would like to go to a college that offers a bachelors degree in marketing, entrepreneurship, or business management. I’m rather poor, so I’m not looking for a high end school, and I can’t get into a community college due to lack of money and a job (I’ve been searching for a job for a year here, even going through government programs and networking with others looking for one, and nothing). I’ve yet to take the ACT or SAT, although it is planned, and I dropped out of Highschool with a GED. Before you call me out for being lazy or dumb, the reason why I dropped out is because highschool was very easy and boring, on top of a bunch of drama going on. I consistently scored in the top 5% nationally on end of grade tests and PSAT/PLAN or whatever the ACT prep test is called, but my GPA is practically nill due to a long depression streak and general apathy. That being said, I’m horrid at math, and struggle at anything past Algebra… My long term goal currently is to open up a business, although I don’t exactly know what I’d like to do.

So, can anyone help me? Any low cost high acceptance colleges in an urban environment that offers my preferred degrees?

How old are you? Students in your position often do go to the CC to show that they can get through a colleges class, as in attending doing the work and getting a passing grade. Smart people who drop classes, take W, can’t stay on task aren’t college ready either and it can be a waste of time and money.

Numbers are really important in business. Do you ever watch Shark Tank or The Profit? It is all about being on top of your numbers. You might find some interest in taking accounting and stats, that’s a bit different than algebra and it has direct application to running a business.

If you are a dependent student of a low income family you may be eligible for a Pell grant–that may get you through a CC . Then when you transfer to one of your state U you can get the Pell + a student loan.

Just some food for thought:

Opening up a business means you’ll need to know how to manage it. That might mean some math beyond basic algebra. I’ve never taken accounting or business courses, but my sister is an accountant and needed Calc I.

You should study and take the ACT or SAT. Since your GPA is bad, you should start in Community College and get good grades to show you are good college material. Then apply to your state school which should be easy to transfer your CC credits. I know CCs don’t really need the SAT but the 4 year colleges will want to see it.

Start at the CC. Find out the costs for your local school and if you’re eligible for any local aid. Between a job and a direct loan you should be able to afford going there.
