I am passionate about product design and graphic design. For qualifications, I have scholastic awards and industrial experience in design. My GPA is not high (3.6). Looking for universities that offer majors not only in art area. Any suggestions are welcome.
All you need to do is google. There’s many lists.
But product design is wide ranging. Could be engineering. Could be art. Or something in between.
Many schools can work.
What’s your state ? Is the 3.6 weighted or not ? What’s your highest math ? Budget.
Honestly the list will be wide open. What do you want in a school ?
Thanks for the reply! The link seems to focus on art-focus colleges more, and some universities that offer product design major are not listed. Such as Georgia Tech. I’m in WI state. The 3.6 GPA is not weighted. I have 4.0 GPA on statistics. As for budget, I can accept tuition for private universities. I want to learn product design with focusing in designing physical products and I target to work on product design job in industry after graduation from college.
So you want to be an engineer or in industrial design.
Check out Iowa State, UMN, and RIT.
CU Boulder has an environmental design degree where one of the major options is environmental product design. I am not sure if that angle interests you (or the fact that you’d need to study other environmental design related subjects as part of the core curriculum),but fyi.
James Madison could be a good one: Industrial Design Major Overview - JMU
If you’d be interested in the Pacific Northwest, check out U of Oregon Product Design Undergraduate Programs | School of Art + Design and Western Washington U. Industrial Design | Western Washington University
U of Cincinnati has an excellent coop-based program Bachelor of Science in Design - Industrial Design - School of Design at DAAP | University of Cincinnati RIT was already mentioned. Virginia Tech and Purdue would be on the reachier side but could be worth a try. Iowa State has been mentioned; their College of Design starts with a common first-year curriculum for all majors, and then has a wide variety of major options including industrial design. Lehigh’s design major spans product design and graphic design, allowing students to choose their emphasis. Design | Art, Architecture and Design
In addition to the schools mentioned above, you might take a look at the Industrial and Product Design major at UW-Stout, as a pretty accessible in-state option.
A friend of mine who’s an industrial design director (he oversees a lot of hiring new grads) is a firm believer that the best list to look at for ID programs is the IDSA design school directory. (Many of the schools folks have listed above are on that list.)
I can vouch for the University of Cincinnati DAAP industrial design program. My daughter is finishing up her first year there and has been flourishing and loves it. That program takes 5 years with 5 coops so you get a year’s worth of work experience while still in school and with access to mentoring and so forth.
Several art schools have programs, including RISDE and the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. Closer to Wisconsin, there’s the Art Institute in Chicago. I hope all went well with your applications!
