Looks Like it's Going to The Convention

Big Surprise…

NOT!

Defeat from the jaws of Victory! Yay, Dems!

Holy. Cannoli.

Wow. We pick a candidate most of us don’t even want to claim, and the democrats eat their own. Astounding.
Won’t Obama have enough delegates to cross the threshhold this week, though?

Here’s the statement:
Harold Ickes and Tina Flournoy made the following statement this evening:

Today’s results are a victory for the people of Florida who will have a voice in selecting our Party’s nominee and will see its delegates seated at our party’s convention. The decision by the Rules and Bylaws Committee honors the votes that were cast by the people of Florida and allocates the delegates accordingly.

We strongly object to the Committee’s decision to undercut its own rules in seating Michigan’s delegates without reflecting the votes of the people of Michigan.

The Committee awarded to Senator Obama not only the delegates won by Uncommitted, but four of the delegates won by Senator Clinton. This decision violates the bedrock principles of our democracy and our Party.

We reserve the right to challenge this decision before the Credentials Committee and appeal for a fair allocation of Michigan’s delegates that actually reflect the votes as they were cast.

Here’s an OpEd by Lanny Davis making the case for giving HIllary the nomination:

Defeat from the jaws of victory, indeed.
I’m still shaking my head at the Hillary supporter who says the reason she support Hillary is that Hillary is the one who can defeat McCain, but if Hillary is not the nominee, she’ll vote for McCain!
Talk about cutting off your nose to spite your face.

I really can’t imagine what argument she will make at the convention. With all due respect, she did lose.

Did anyone see Nancy Pelosi pointing out that voters will wonder if the party can govern America if they can’t even govern themselves?

It’s not going to the convention, it’s all talk to attempt to make this over dramatic. Ickes made an empty threat and the committee called his bluff.

With Florida and Michigan settled, this race is over.

Found this little nugget. [US Elections: Hillary Clinton to be offered dignified exit - Telegraph](http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/uselection2008/2058907/US-Elections-Hillary-Clinton-to-be-offered-dignified-exit.html)

And how does the British press scoop all this wonderful inside info on US elections? Inquiring minds want to know. :)

I think it should go all the way to the convention. None of them will have enough pledged delegates to clinch the nomination.

I agree with Tyler09. It’s over. Obama will be the democratic presidential nominee and rightfully so. Clinton’s campaign doesn’t want to admit it, but Obama’s campaign has been better organized almost from the inception of the race and his strategy in the primaries/caucuses was brilliant. Hillary bet the ranch on the assumption that she would achieve an overwhelming victory on Super Tuesday and it didn’t happen. It’s time for her to admit defeat and gracefully exit the race.

Over on June 4th, not going to the Convention. Ickes statements prevent headlines tomorrow from being “Obama wins”.
He huffed and puffed enough to keep everyone guessing.

This will be over June 4th.

Hillary can destroy the little credibility she has left by taking it past Wednesday. She can be pretty dumb, but I doubt THAT dumb.

gbesq: Correct, which is why if the primaries were about electing a final official this would be over. But it’s not, it’s about electing a candidate to stand another election. And, obviously, there are compelling arguments to be made that Hillary is a better candidate in the general than Obama is. Best of all, the Democratic Party created a mechanism to deal with just this exact situation - the superdelegates - and yet everyone seems shocked that they might decide it, as they were designed to.

Here’s a new rule suggestion. Have all the primaries on the same day. And make it winner take all, like the republicans do. The system they have now is nuts.

I vote for a national primary day every four years. And make it a national holiday so I don’t have to go to work. Or a Saturday if I don’t get my holiday so voting is more convenient.

Unlike most of you here I don’t think it’ll go to the convention. I think after next weeks final primaries the SD’s will make up their mind, go for Obama big. After that Clinton will drop out…not right away but I don’t see it going to the convention. That being said I think the decision today is good for McCain supporters because the Clinton people seem outraged.

I’m glad it was decided this way, best of both worlds for us McCainiacs. We don’t have to face Clinton (who is looking to be the far tougher opponent) and some of her supporters won’t vote for Obama.

1of42,

I appreciate your point, but I suspect that we will be seeing the majority of the superdelegates supporting Obama. This is certainly not to say that Clinton isn’t well qualified for the job, but I think that many – including her – have greatly underestimated Obama, with predictable results. It will be interesting to see if McCain makes the same mistake.

gbesq, I agree that many have underestimated Obama, but my point was merely that since winning the nomination is not an end but a means, saying “Obama has a slight majority so the SDs should support him” is not necessarily valid.

^Yes, I understood your point. Thanks.

Too funny. Keep an eye out for Harriet, Zoosermom. ;)
