Eager to hear about the Arabic programs at LC and Deerfield. Both look very strong but so much of language training is tied to classroom dynamics and how the instructor runs the class so would welcome any firsthand feedback on these programs. Thank you very much.
The Arabic program at Deerfield is very strong and popular. It has been around for a while. We know several students who took 4 years of the program - are now pursuing further language study in college along with foreign relations, political science, economics, etc. It is a challenging program of study that prepares you well for college level courses or study overseas. I hear from my kiddo’s friends - the teachers are AMAZING. It is difficult, but people really enjoy it. Plus, there is a close relationship with the King’s Academy in Jordan. The king of Jordan is an alumni of Deerfield. Before COVID - there was a regularly scheduled program for students to spend time at the King’s Academy in Jordan. There were also learning and community service opportunities there (before COVID).
If you/your student has already taken Arabic, a placement test is given online over the summer.
An additional plus is that the Deerfield HOS, Dr Austin, came last year from the King’s Academy - where he was the HOS there. So, there is a serious commitment to the excellence of Arabic Studies at DA.
You can call Admissions and ask to get more information, or email the Dept chair for details.
Thank you for that thoughtful reply. We were at Kings this summer for a visit (unrelated to admission) which is what led to the decision to move forward with applying to Deerfield!
