Loomis Chaffee: Good News for FA applicants

I know there has been a lot of discussion on here recently about FA applicants, so I thought I’d post some good news. For the next 10 years, Loomis Chaffee will have funds to offer full rides to an additional 8-10 students ovr what they were offering in the past. ALSO, to a degree, this money is targeted toward qualified international applicants who need significant FA.

SO, if you are thinking about applying to BS, need significant financial aid, and aren’t familiar with Loomis Chaffee, I suggest you check it out. Since it is part day school, the entering freshman class of boarders is 84 students. I would guess that more than half of those funds will go to entering freshmen, so that’s 4-5 full rides a year out of 85 students (not all of whom will need that financial aid). So it’s pretty attractive, decent odds, worth checking out. I know the program started this current school year.

Here’s a little more from the LC Admissions website:

“We have also received a significant gift from alumnus and long time supporter of financial aid, Mr. Henry R. Kravis ’63 who pledged $500,000 per year over the next ten years. Mr. Kravis’ generosity will have an immediate impact on our ability to provide access to approximately 8-10 deserving students. Plans are already underway to create the Henry R. Kravis Leadership Scholars Program focused on identifying talented students from underrepresented communities both within the United States and in select countries from around the world.”

wait - for internationals as well? gosh that’s awesome

Bumping this after noticing how many of these Chance threads are international/FA candidates. The prevailing assumption seems to be that since PA and PEA are the biggest schools in terms of endowment and student population, these are the places foreign students needing FA ALL have on their list. Somehow Loomis Chaffee, even though it is a TSAO school, rarely gets mentioned in this context. Please see my original post at top, then consider this.

PA % internationals: 10% (PA website)
PEA % internationals: 9.6 % (PEA website)
LC % internationals: 17% (LC website)

LC is a somewhat smaller school (not as small as Hotchkiss, Taft, or Deerfield) compared to PA & PEA, but its endowment is strong, its commitment to internationals is strong, and they have money for diversity scholarships specifically designated for internationals. Also, while not an easy admit (27%), the admission rate is certainly a worthwhile roll of the dice when PA & PEA’s admit rates are both in the teens.

Perhaps you should be checking it out. 'Nuff said.
