Loomis going to block schedule

DC had a great revisit, but we were surprised to learned that Loomis is moving to a block schedule in the fall. Definitely know the pros and cons of such a schedule, but there was palatable surprise in the auditorium when during one of the presentations the schedule news appeared to “slip out.” To the school’s credit, the presenter in response to a round of questions from parents answered clearly and transparently (with the head of school in the auditorium). Not sure how Loomis intended (or when it intended) to share the schedule news. The block schedule could be a factor for some in deciding where to attend BS.

Why would a block schedule be an issue for new students (or old for that matter)?

My DD is a current sophomore at Loomis. I don’t think the changes are that significant…she still has the same number of courses, there are just longer “blocks” which I believe gives the students a chance to delve in deeper in each subject.

I think block schedules make enormous sense for a child who is old enough (which they should be if they are going to BS for 9th grade)

@6teenSearch – for some students (and DC has friends like this) who do not like the longer block schedule and prefer the traditional shorter class blocks…It’s a preference thing…Personally, I don’t think the preference has to do with whether they are old enough to attend BS.

Some kids (and parents) prefer one kind of schedule to another. One school near me has a 7x3 (or 3x7 I get them mixed up) - 3 classes/module and 7 modules/year. This is a very different feel to the year and each class than a 3x5/6 - 5 or 6 classes a term for 3 terms.
