i’m sure you all have seen the extreme damage done by hurricane Katrina in louisiana and alabama. on the new you can also see there is a huge problem with looting and people breaking in to steal not only food, but also toys electronics, and other things that would seem to not be useful at all. people were stealing from toys r us and shoe stores with 20 pairs of shoes. however, they have nothing at all right now.

so what would you do? would you just take food and thats it? or would you take anything you saw?

personally, i would def take food and such. as far as other stores and things like shoes and such, i don’t know. i would certainly be tempted. i’d probably take enough for me and my family. i might even take more once i realized i have absolutely nothing except the clothes on my back, and the fact that the police are saying “do what you gotta do” (heard it on nbc) wouldn’t help the temptation.

so all in all, i’d probably take everthing i could. not in a selfish, criminal way. i’d give to those in need that had less as well. but i’d still take what seemingly isn’t mine. it’s wrong, yes. but under those circumstances, what else can you do?

Honestly I would take food from supermarkets, just to keep my self, my family, my friends, and anyone else that might need it from going hungry. But as far as it goes for other things like electronics, toys etc… I don’t think I would. When you’re talking about people actually going into other people’s houses and taking food and other things from inside the house, I think that’s just wrong (this has happened in some parts as far as news reports go). I think besides food I definatly would NOT take anything else. I just wouldn’t feel right doing it.

wow. other peoples houses? ok that’s crossing the line. i would never do that. but convenience stores and such wouldn’t seem as bad. it’s definitely the lesser of two evils. but think about it. the store are completely damaged, help isn’t coming for a while, and you have NOTHING. i think that when push comes to shove, i would have no choice but to “steal” things from stores.

Yeah, I mean if there’s nothing else you can do in order to survive for a couple of weeks/months to wait until the city is cleared and you can return to your houses (or what’s left of them anyways) I would take stuff from supermarkets, but from houses seems overboard. I don’t understand why people would take electronics, shoes, and clothing. The electronics probably wouldn’t work and the shoes and the clothing would probably be soaked, and possibly teared. I just don’t see the point in it.

its there. i mean they have soaked clothes on their back, and they see dry ones in the store, so they mount it one a boat or roll it down the now dry streets.

I guess… I would feel incredibly weird if I were stealing clothes from a store that was destroyed during a hurricane. I personally can’t live with the thought of me ever stealing anything, so it’s quite weird for me to think about stealing clothes… for some reason food just falls into a different category for me.

don’t steal the unnecessaries, it’s not good for the economy, and not to mention your soul either. we, as american citizens of the united states, need to appreciate our great country, great president, and the great morals he has taught us and follows every moment of his life. ;)

I would if it was stealing from a local Wal-Mart…Evil Corporations!

Tpeck please keep your ignorant comments to yourself, I understand you really need attention (you obviously don’t care if it’s positive or negative) this board is not the place for it.

Oh sorry then, I saw a bunch of people looting on TV and carrying their loot in garbage bags. Most of them drown anyway when they were expose to avacuate. Not to bright.

My thoughts on looting… If you’re at a supermarket stealing food, I can understand that. Everything is closed and you need to eat. If you break in somewhere and steal clothin and it’s appearent that you’re in dire need of it, once again I can understand that. If you break into a Bestbuy and steal things such as battries and flashlights, that is still understandable. If you break into that same Bestbuy and leave with a 60 inch Plasma screen, then I think you should be looking at some prison time.

Basically if you’re looting in order to survive, that I can understand. If you’re looting because you need a new stero, then you’ve gone to far. Also stealing from peoples homes seems to be completely crossing the line…

Final thought… If I was going to loot and make off with that 60 inch TV, I’d make sure that the TV cameras were not watching me. Failing that I would not turn and wave to the camera as I was commiting my crime! Just a thought, but it sure seemed like a bad idea to me. :)

I agree with the others that say looting is bearable if it is to survive… but why should the stores just give you their merchandise? Insurance normally doesn’t cover looting so why should that company go under? See what I’m saying. Just something to think about.

I don’t see the point in looting electronics when there’s a good chance I’ll drop it in the water, or when there’s no power to use the electronic (and there won’t be for a while), or when some other idiot might come and beat the crap out of me and then take that electronic.

However, if disaster did hit my area, it would be time for me to sharpen the swords and knives (what good is a gun when the guy is 3 feet away from you in a house?) because I certainly don’t want anyone looting from my house.

I would loot food. And if I saw something like an mp3 player on the floor near the shop (not in the shop), I would probably take that too…
I don’t think I would even think about looting… I’d be more worried about my family and thier health and others’ (friends) healths.

swords make very good weapons in close combat =). Within 5-6 feet, a sword is a gun’s equal in terms of combat. However, I’m not exactly a gun owner or obsessive about guns. Another side note: Even though more modern, I feel that guns are more barbaric and random while the lighter swords are more sophisticated (kinda like Obi-wan on his opinion about lightsabers and blasters).

I prefer katanas over everything else because I know Kendo. However, I can also use rapier. Basically anything that is fast and light. I’m not exactly strong enough to use a huge claymore properly (those things are heavy! And all you do with those is chop and bash.)
