Has anyone out there had a student or have they themselves graduated from Lawrence with an engineering degree? It is a general degree and I’m just curious how things have turned out? We really like everything about the school but are concerned about the degree not being specified.
It’s supposed to say Loras College, not Lawrence. Sorry.
What does the engineering department there have to say about career and grad school placement? Provided the program is accredited by ABET, it should be fine.
It’s not unusual for schools with small engineering programs to issue “general” engineering degrees. Dartmouth, Harvey Mudd, Swarthmore, and Smith are examples of highly ranked schools that do this. They are all ABET accredited for “general” engineering, as is Loras. The ABET “seal of approval” ensures that these will be accepted as “real” engineering degrees.
Some small schools issue “general” engineering degrees, but they also offer the option of specialization or concentrations in different areas. In contrast, it looks like the Loras program only has one concentration, which is mechatronics. If you are interested in mechatronics or robotics, then Loras program could be a perfectly good choice. If you have other engineering interests, then Loras might not be the best option.
