Los Angeles: Most overrated city in the world?

dude, i went to LA for my winter break…it’s so legit. so many different types of people. I also loved the UCLA campus, but i dont know. some people say you have to live in a place to see what it’s really like. I loved it while i was there

People don’t drive in LA. They sit in traffic. Installing those people mover type things they have at airports would be more efficient in moving people around.

If I were to live there I’d go insane. Did I mention the absurd cost of living, primarily because of all those people that stay in dead end jobs just to “enjoy” the “California weather?” And they think it’s the best thing since sliced bread. Sorry, but cost of living ranks MUCH, MUCH higher as a priority.

Archaic thread, but still : )

I do think a city can be overrated and underrated based on QOL and on hype. Cities project a lot of images and lifestyle, but if you’re not in that upper income bracket the likeliness of you “really” loving any given city, especially NYC, is slim to none.

That’s where people blur the lines of “I think I want to live here” vs. “It’s a great place to visit every now and then.” Granted America’s media to virtually pimp out both LA and NYC, it’s no wonder people say that neither can’t be overrated.

The general saying is that if you have to live in LA, you hate it. If you just visit it, then it’s cool.

There are so many Los Angeleses. Some parts are really bad. The area around downtown, for example. East L. A. But in the greater L. A. area are some places that are just heaven. Southern Ventura County. The Hollywood Hills. Beverly Hills. Many of the beach cities.

I moved here from Chicago. Which was hell. If hell froze over.

What’s funny is that I just got back from a vacation to L.A. I unfortunately have to agree with you, L.A. is ****ty as hell. I wasn’t even impressed with Beverly Hills; it just seemed to have too much prestige while lacking any intellectual population.
And I’ve been to New York, Chicago, and many other major U.S. cities, so I at least somewhat know what I’m talking about.

LA is a ****hole. Just like NYC, London, etc.

Tons of pollution, Volent crime, Terribly high taxes, Congestion, Superficial People, Hypocritical Hollywood stars, etc…the list goes on and on and on

“I moved here from Chicago. Which was hell. If hell froze over.”

Oh please. The winters aren’t THAT bad. Have you’ve been to the Twin Cities or Canada for winter?

Lol at some of the posts in this thread.

I LOVE LA but people will have their own opinions.

Oh and i was born in Laguna Niguel (the OC), raised in Westwood so i know LA all too well

Old thread but that don’t bother me.

LA is big and dirty. I don’t like it. It has no skyline. It doesn’t have anything real special other than the REAL rich neighborhoods and the weather.

I’m biased but I think Chicago is the American city. It’s right smack-dab in the center of the USA, it’s much more laid back than NY or LA. It’s got its own distinct culture, it has a beautiful skyline and a beautiful position along the lake, the tallest building in the USA, and a really nice stretch of parks and recreational facilities along the lakefront (there are no high-rise apartments blocking the view or anything). It has numerous sports teams that are decent (even though Soldier Field looks like a spaceship landed in a colosseum), it has several well-respected universities in and around it, it has a great cluster of museums all in one place, and you can experience all four seasons!

Michigan avenue around Christmastime is magical! lol

So there.

It’s true, LA is a ugly city. I think San Francisco or San Diego are way more exciting and beautiful compared to LA. I personally think its all of the rich people or celebs that live their that make it more than what it really is. When I visited LA once, I wasn’t expecting all of the trash on the side of the road. It was a turn off if it wasn’t for the celebs, Hollywood, beaches and theme parks.

But then again, they’res beaches everywhere.
