Rue McLanahan died today of a stroke. Is this part of the “faamous people die in 3’s” pattern?

Is Betty White the only remailing main female character from Golden Girls?

Is Betty White the only remailing main female character from Golden Girls?

Yes, Betty is the only one. I finally got around to watching the SNL episode last night and I was just thinking of Rue. Sad to see she is gone.

Such sad news. Rue McClanahan, Estelle Getty and Bea Arthur were all terrific. They will be missed.

Nope. Just an old wives tale, urban legend, etc.

Umpteen years ago, I met her. She came as a guest speaker to our teen 4-H club. This was after she had been a guest on “All in the Family”, but not so famous for other things. I have no idea who knew her to set it up. She brought her albums of head shots and similar things. I had seen her on the “All in the Family” episode, but I don’t think any of the other kids had. Who knew she would turn out to be so famous.

I think Betty White’s recent resurgence on TV has prompted many people to fondly recall The Golden Girls (plus, many of us on this board are at that age where we can appreciate the nuances and stories behind the series now). I don’t think I remember another TV show causing my grandmother (who was widowed for 50 years when she died at almost 102) to laugh so hard… at the time, I didn’t get it - now I do. RIP

I watch reruns of the Golden Girls…they are hilarious. Honestly, I don’t think I’ll ever tire of them…so witty and creative. They always make me laugh.

Apparently not everyone thinks the “die in 3s” is just a wives tale http://www.popeater.com/2010/06/01/celebrity-deaths-in-threes/?ncid=webmaildl2

Aw, The Golden Girls!
That was the best! Not only does the show itself make me smile, but the memories of watching it with my GrandMa and laughing makes me smile even more!
Those ladies were/are the best!
I just have to say, Go Betty White…the girl still has it! :)

I always loved how the horny femme fatale Blanche was speechless whenever Betty White’s character talked about her very active sex life with Lars - as if everyone was seeing that amount of action

Nonsense. Law of averages says celebrities are occasionally going to die “in 3’s.” Far more often, they just don’t. In that article, it mentions when 2 celebrities died, then “a few months later” another one did. That is hardly a cluster of 3.

The article you quoted basically debunks the whole notion.

Party pooper. We also talked about this in the Dennis Hopper thread. Much more entertaining to read about who they felt was/was not famous in order to come up with the triad.

Here’s the link to that thread, if you want to join midwesterner in poo-pooing peoples amusement. Be sure to read younghoss’s response

My grandmother used to watch The Golden Girls with my D when she was under 8 (my D, not granny). GG (Great Grandma) would laugh so hard and D would look at her funny. GG would say, “someday you’ll understand” Now my D & I both laugh when we watch the show.

I was thinking that with Rue McClanahan’s death that Betty White must be biting her nails a bit. Being the last survivor is not a happy place to be in (unless there’s a million dollar prize in wait).

RIP Rue McClanahan.

I’ve discovered that my 20 yo kid and her friends are fans of The Golden Girls. :)

The kid showed me a message board she frequents and the thread about Rue and The Golden Girls was quite long. The show and the actresses are timeless.

For a few laughs head over to YouTube. You can find Golden Girl bloopers. Nothing like laughing out loud at work. :)

Yep. Everyone is saying Mclanahan makes number 3. But actually you have her, Dennis Hopper, Gary Coleman, and Art Linkletter, so that’s really 4. People shape it the way they want to in order to make it “fit.”

Totally agree that she may sadly be the start of a new “3”. (Then again-- her Golden Girls character probably would enjoy being part of a threesome).

Nrdsb4- Are you famous? If so-- be careful driving this week! No need to become # 2 or 3!

Heavens- 2 of John Travolta’s dogs sere killed in a freak accident in a Maine airport about 2-3 weeks ago. How did we miss that? If it was 3 dogs- they’d have their own triad. http://www.hollywoodmemoir.com/node/831
