Losing credit for being absent?

Has anyone ever had a teacher like this? One of my teachers gives us a “0” in his gradebook for the day for participation if we are absent and we absolutely cannot make it up. Doesn’t that sound a bit dumb? Participation is also worth 20-25% of our grade…

I have teachers that penalize you for missing a test (one of them, for example, allows you to get half of your points back on a test if you correct all of your mistakes, and those absent on test day don’t get to do so).

I was almost kicked out of a class the year before last for being absent so many times (which would have resulted in, like, an F for that class ;o )(I missed a month or so of school because my flight back to the states was canceled because of a terrorist attack, and the cheapest ticket was a long ways off, so I stayed, haha)

Yes, my AP teacher requires us to be there on days in which we do practice AP tests and they count for 20% of the grade for the first semester and 30% for the second. Thankfully, so long as we show up and show we attempted them, we get an automatic A.

My high school had a policy for a long time that 12 absences was a loss of credit, no matter the class. The only absences that didn’t count toward that were field trips. You could appeal for it if it was because of medical reasons or something equally serious, like a death in the family or something. The year before I left they changed it to 6 unexcused absences.

I also had a teacher last quarter who said that if you missed 10 classes she would ask you to retake the course. I missed way more than that and ended up with a 4.0. Of course, I think she cut me a lot of slack because my dad died and I missed a whole week because of it.

My math teacher last quarter would not allow anyone to make up missed quizzes and you would only make up tests if you arranged it with him ahead of time. But he had a pretty generous quiz-drop policy - he dropped the lowest three quiz scores.

At my school one can miss 10 days before losing credit for the class. :(

Oh ya, and about my AP classes credit policy, they also count school business as absences and we still lose the credit on the days we miss.

That sucks. I would’ve been screwed, I missed tons of school for band performances and trips and rehearsals and the like.

Even if you’re sick and stuff?

None of my teachers do this, but apparently the chorus teacher at my school, who is a NAZI, always gives “daily participation grades” or something, and if you’re absent, you get a 0 for the day. And if you miss a test or whatever they do for grades in chorus [lol] you get a 0 as well.

^^ You could have a death in the family and my AP teachers wouldn’t budge on the policy.

^ Well, that’s reasonable - the only good excuse for not coming to school is if you are the one that died.

my lang teacher did this. everyone complained about it, she wouldnt take anything. school sponsored field trips, sickness, etc. doesnt matter.
but the thing is that it counted as participation points. like you get a 100 every day you’re there and when you aren’t you get a 0. so in actuality, it usually brought our grades up! still annoying though, haha

As long as it’s excused, it’s illegal in Michigan to punish you for missing school.

my hs tried to punish me for that… didn’t succeed as I’m now in college. :}

Uh, is that legal?

My school also has a similar policy - if you are absent for a number of days, you risk losing credit, even if you are passing a certain class with an A.

Concerning absences, my school’s fine.

I’ll be gone for 3 months and it won’t matter, probably. As far as I know…
