I’m a very hard working student(#1 in my High School in New York), and I’ve been preparing for the SAT for a while now. I’m taking it in January; very good at math, but I’ve been working on CR. I study on average at least 4 hours a day on constant CR tests, but that isn’t enough?

From where my parents come from, they used to study 8-12 hours a day in their country. They’re sort of disappointed in me in how I"m not studying at least 8 hours. I can’t even study anymore without questioning why I’m even bothering to study because I know that they’ll always be disappointed with my studying. I know that to do good on CR, I have to read the passage, answer the questions, see why I got the questions wrong and develop my own pattern of answering questions. I understand that the SAT is very important and I’m studying a lot for it(only one day did I actually study the gruelling 8-9 hours), but my parents are acting as if I do bad on this, it’s going to be a disaster. I mentioned that I can take the SAT at least 5-6 more times before I apply for college, but then they’re telling me that I’m slacking because they heard someone’s son getting a 1600/1600 on their first try. I want to get it over with the first time, and I know that parents constantly telling you to study is good, but now it’s gotten to the point where it’s like they’re really dismotivating me and making me feel bad.

How much did you guys study everyday? I just can’t focus anymore since I’m getting frustrated with their constant lectures on my 4 hours of studying. I don’t have anyone else to turn to. I can’t ask them for motivation because if I do, they’ll keep telling me how I"m disappointing me and I should study even more to make them happy, but that doesn’t work. How did you guys study? Is 8 hours really necessary? I feel that 4 hours a day(constant memorizing and reading passages) is enough, but if 8 hours is really NECESSARY, I will then, but I don’t want to tire myself out to the point where I can’t study.

Holy crap that sounds unbearable! I mean my parents motivate me to study more, but 8 hours straight does sound like overload. I agree, if they keep this up, you’ll do worse. On test day, you’ll feel that frustration that you have right now within you. As hard as it is to focus now, you sort of have to just put your parents aside if you know what’s best. By aside, I mean like keep studying however much you feel like is necessary. You need to convince them that you’re doing fine. Still, I’m sure that the thoughts of what would happen if you didn’t get your desired score on test day might scare you a little. I mean sure everyone is nervous, but lol yours sounds like, “If you don’t get 2400, you’re getting kicked out of the house when you’re 18!” lol. I mean not like that, but you have to go and think that I need to focus and I’ll study however I want to. It sounds like your parents don’t know what the SAT is about. IT’s a reasoning test, not something where you have to memorizing thousands of body parts for a medical degree or spend a whole day studying for law or something.

I still can’t imagine studying in those conditions. I mean sure more hours is good, but you need to develop your own self confidence that what you’re doing right now is just fine. Develop your own patterns and try and put aside those lectures that are dismotivating you. I mean if I were a parent, I would be lecturing my kid like crazy if he was not studying at all or just studying 30 minutes, but lecturing someone over not studying 8 hours(when you have almost 1-2 months till the test everyday us just unthinkable. Ask your parents if they were on coffee or caffeine when they stayed up for 8 hours straight because I don’t see how anyone would do that. It’s not healthy!

oh man i feel really bad for you. i obviously don’t know their parents, but 8 hours a day? are they seriously exaggerating? HOLY CRAP there are only so many hours in a day. i mean you come home at 3 (assuming you don’t have sports…) and studying for 8 hours for the SAT already puts you at 11 o’clock. THEN YOU HAVE TO EAT, DO YOUR OTHER SCHOOL HOMEWORK (and you’re freaking val…*** do they expect?), …holy crap. :(

i understand a little where you are coming from…i have a friend whose parents are kind of like this. all i can say is that you sound like a really, really motivated kid and that you just need to keep your head up
4 hours a day is already an immense amount of studying… i hope you get out and have some fun :(. there’s always that asian-mom-network (this is just an example. sorry if you’re not asian LOL) that compares test scores…it’s ridiculous.

anyway, to answer your question, 8 hours IS REALLY not necessary. you’re just going to end up hating the test and you probably won’t do well on it… good luck and i hope you do well enough the first time to get it over with.

Well it’s Christmas and they wanted me to spend a lot of my time studying during Christmas. During school, it’s harder to study. I mean I don’t just do 4 hours. It’s like 2-3 hours of studying strategies and doing some practice tests(from the prep book), and then I do about 1-2 hours of full practice tests. It’s quite a lot of work, but they can’t understand American culture. They say that I’m becoming accustomed to the lazy American culture. The SAT tests skills differently than theirs were tested, so they don’t understand it as well. I just keep doing practice tests, but this is the last thing that they want me to get out of the way. Sure it’s good to push and not to condone someone’s laziness, but you gotta have some sense of GOOD JOB KEEP IT UP. But yeah I’ll be so happy after the SAT is out of my way, but then I might have to take SAT IIs, which aren’t too much of a stress. The more tests I do great on, the better I feel in myself and the more I forget about their lectures and the dismotivation that the lectures bring. I just wish I could take the SAT now instead of the end of January. End the tormet already lol.

Hooray for Pain-In-The-Butt Asian parents, yeah? I don’t think studying like crazy for the SAT I is going to do all that much to raise your score. The only skill you learn that’s any use is that you build the ability to maintain a level head for a five hour test. The content, as others have said, is very very simple stuff. If you’re the #1 student in your class and are used to studying your pants off, just relax and make sure you stay relaxed for your test. The first time I took it, I didn’t study at all but I got a good nights rest and told myself that I had two more years to retake if it went poorly. I ended up getting a 2330 that time so go figure (Yes, my parents told me that if I had studied, I would have a 2400 so you’re not alone with your parents).

We Asians are hard workers lol! Why else are a majority of today’s animated movies being made in India? We’re great in Math and Science but struggle in reading.

A 2330 on your first try? Lol if his parents see that, then they’ll make him study 14 hours if they keep hearing that! So you took it in 10th grade and got a 2330? Didn’t you do some sort of studying? How did you approach the questions then if you never knew what the SAT was like before?

India rulz in Anime.(rahul ur frm south?) I don’t think its Asians only who have problem with reading on the SAT.
every1 does becoz of the unusual vocab (which is not used in day to day communication…I mean u better not unless u want to be thought of as a u Know what) and because of the very less time there is to do it.

And btw… isn’t English the only lingo we are fluent in (even though we are asians)? So its what we have to perfect ourselves in be it reading or speaking. (I don’t know how to read or write in my mother tongue)
And i am not against English coz i feel that there must be just one language for all people whether its English or not. Having a dozen major languages spoils the concept of languages itself.

Coming to the OP, 8 hours? that’s fine… but 7 is more manageable.
take 1 hour in your lunch break
take 4 hours after school (3 for school work and 1 for SAT)
take 2 hours before breakfast and school

^ only until you get to 23rd Jan. After that just make sure u get enough rest for the 26th. (real test day)

Since your val … i think u can manage that.
I am sal …come back home around six (after EC’s) so i just find 2 proper hours after that to do SAT or homework. Your pretty lucky as you seemed to have covered a lot on the sat doing 7+ hours already. good luck!
