Losing need based aid because of grades [Satisfactory Academic Progress]

@kelsmom perhaps can describe why a student would lose their need based aid because they are not meeting Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). This is important.

Federal regulations dictate that schools must monitor satisfactory academic progress. SAP is determined by the school, but it must meet the requirements of the federal regulations. There are two components, academic performance and pace. Here is an explanation: Federal Student Aid. Here is an example of a school’s SAP policy: Policies - Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships - Oakland University (click on the + sign next to 11. Satisfactory Academic Progress.) As you can see, it’s pretty complicated. Numerous students do lose aid due to not meeting SAP, and while there is an appeal process, appeals are not always granted.

And to add to Kelsmom’s fine post- a kid who can’t be bothered to figure out the drop/add date, is likely to be the kid who is SHOCKED to discover that they are under-enrolled and are not meeting SAP.

Parents- remind your kid that the deadlines listed are not “soft dates” or optional. These are hard deadlines which determine whether or not you can drop a class without it showing up on your transcript OR showing up as a W if you’ve withdrawn too late.
