Some background I have Cystic Fibrosis (a genetic lung disease) that gets worse with age. Last fall I got accepted to my dream college (Cedarville university) I unfortunately was only there 12 days before CF got the better of me and I had to drop the semester and be hospitalized back home. I decided to try again this spring. This time I made it a month and a half and then the same story. I can’t go back…Ohio apparently doesn’t agree with my lungs. I’m gonna commute somewhere local for the fall but how do I get past losing my dream college? I think of little things in gonna miss and tear up. I had no idea in a month and a half how much I could love it. I just can’t believe I’m not going back ever…
I’m sorry to hear of your experience. It is sad. You’re experiencing grief. How do you get past losing your dream college? Like everyone else who has lost something (or someone) dear to them - you just keep doing what you can do, and little by little it will get better. There aren’t really any tricks, except to acknowledge the loss, and keep putting one foot in front of the other toward things that will be positive in your life. I have a dear friend who lives with severe symptoms from Lupus. He gains great benefit from meditation and practicing mindfulness and gratitude. I know he lives with a lot of loss, and these things seem to help him. Oh, I will add, a lot of people don’t get to attend their dream colleges, and eventually find that a new situation is somehow even better in the long run. I hope this will be your experience. Best wishes to you.
I would like to add, can you maybe try again at a college that better agrees with your lungs? Do you do better in dry climates? Maybe something in Arizona? There are good schools there.
