Lots more apps next year for top schools with enhanced fin aid for low/mid income

I predict that in the future many more excellent students will apply for admission to the top schools that are providing free or greatly reduced tuition/room board for low/middle income families, making it even harder to get in. There is no reason for anyone NOT to apply to these schools. Who knows, you might get lucky and win the educational lottery. These schools are so selective that a certain amount of luck is involved, but now that you know the financial burden won’t be so great, why not try? Of course, the application procedures at these schools are difficult, but the rewards are so great.

I predict lots of transfer applications, too.

Our son grabbed the gold ring this year with EA admission to Stanford, but we wonder if he were applying next year instead, would he have still been admitted.

As my daughter’s a junior we followed the changes in financial aid with great interest. Our budget doesn’t allow for visits to Stanford, Yale, etc.; she received information from Questbridge but for all practical purposes we make too much money (or so it seems according to their guidelines!) A lot of these schools had good packages already so it will be interesting to see if applications truly do increase.
