Lots of Pre-Meds A good thing?

So someone told me my most likely future university (University of Miami) has LOTS of pre-meds and incoming pre-meds. Is this a bad thing? I know I would like to volunteer but will I be clawing eyes out to find something lol? Also any feed back on UMiami’s premed program is welcomed!

Bump…

Keep in mind that most pre-meds never get to medical school. People realize it’s not what they want, or they can’t keep up with the pre-med curriculum. I read an article somewhere (I’ll find you a link if you want) that claimed that in most universities around half the pre-med population (assuming they keep track of it) drops out of pre-med between Chem 2 and Orgo.

^No need for article, I believe 50% is average all across with variations at every school. It is not just that they cannot keep up. Some (including very top kids) are sent to school for pre-med by their parents, some want to have too much fun, others are too proud to seek help…whatever the reason. Those who really want it, will get thru one way or another with formal or informal help and whatever else…
I am not sure if I understant about importance of number of pre-meds at particular school.

Lots of premeds is a lousy thing. Premeds are a horrible, super-competitive species who generally aren’t pleasant to be around in large numbers (I say this as someone starting medical school next year).

Plus, any “premed program” is NOT something you want to be in. There is no reason to major in premed unless you actually want to hurt your application. Find a major you actually like, take the med school prerequisites classes in addition to the requirements for your major, make sure to keep an awesome GPA, and do the necessary stuff outside of class, and you’ll be fine.

You want to have quite a few, though. If you’re the only premed at a school (or one of very few) they’re not going to have the advising and reputation that can help you out. But too many can also be frustrating.

She has met very nice people during her multiple interviews at Med. Schools with one exception. Yes, as an exception, she has met one person that she did not care about. D. has withdrew from this school. She said she does not see herself going there. In her UG, D. has been surrounded by good number of awesome pre-meds, she had fun with them in classes, spending weekends, going to rec. center, being in sorority, sharing interview experiences and being proud of their acceptance to Med. Schools. Also her pre-med advising has been top notch.
