low 90% average from high school, but unique talent in art

Say that someone has like a low 90% average from high school, but they have a unique talent in the art. What are the chances of that person getting into an Ivy like Princeton if there portfolio appeals to them?

NO ONE CAN GIVE YOU A PERCENT OR CHANCE. Just pray or hope or whatever, and see what happens. You don’t need to go to an ivy, a top 20, or even a top 100 to be happy.

Oh come on, how many Ivy League applicants have a “unique talent/ec”? I mean really…

What’s up with all the sarcastic comments on CC recently? Maybe it’s just that time of year.

Anyway, the best advice I can give you is to GO FOR IT. If your dream school is Princeton or another Ivy League just apply and see what happens. Don’t get your hopes up. Don’t expect an acceptance. But definitely don’t let the chance of getting rejected stop you from trying.

Absolutely go for it. Keep your grades up and get test scores that are at least “in the range.” Fill out the arts supplement. Even the Ivies are trying to build an interesting community, and they may just need/want your specific interest.

CC always has sarcastic comments… it’s the beauty of it.

A person with a 90% average has a “chance” at getting in to a top school, for sure. My school doesn’t publish GPAs, but mine is ~3.6. I guess I’m unique in that I’m interested in math/science/engineering AND art/music/dance. I got in to WUSTL (not an ivy, but comparable in selectivity… although I am a legacy). So yes, it’s totally possible. Do well on the SAT/ACT (if you haven’t already taken them), and write good essays.

Art can sometimes be like athletics. If you plan on being an art or music major and you are spectacular in that field, even an Ivy might forgive your relative deficiencies in some other areas in order to recruit you. But be forewarned – I’m talking spectacular, not, “Oh, it’s this little hobby of mine.” That won’t cut it.

If you are really talented in the arts, it can make being accepted to Princeton a bit easier. But as mentioned by 4th house, it cant just be a “little hobby”.
Just remember that Princeton is looking for the total package in its applicants, so make sure that your academics are as strong as they can be before focusing on your artwork.

I would say you need to have won awards if you want to make it factor into your admissions.

Or have an impressive list of exhibitions of your work.

I know someone who had a 93 average, and was an extremely talented artist (went to a specialized prestigious art high school), and was accepted to Yale. Another one had a 96 average (the val), was a talented singer/vocalist and got into Harvard and Princeton (went to Harvard). Go for it.
