Low average on one Senior AP Course? What to do?

I have an 80% on AP Literature. I am taking 4 AP classes in total (all in senior year as my school only offers 8 AP classes). Rest of my marks are fine, junior and senior all As.

I have only 2 days left to decide whether to drop this class or not.
If I apply RD, must I send out quarter marks? I know schools do not require them but my counselor insists that I send them.

How much is a 80% in AP class senior year going to hurt my chances at the Ivies?

1) If you have 80% now, and you apply yourself better for the rest of the semester, you should be able to pull that grade up. Talk to your teacher about what you should be doing that you haven’t been doing in class so far this semester.

2) Your guidance counselor knows who from your HS has been admitted to the different colleges and universities. He/she can best advise you on whether this one grade in this one particular course will affect your admission at a particular institution.

3) Many colleges and universities DO require your first quarter grades because they will be reading your file before the semester grades can be reported. This also may be a standard policy for your HS. If your counselor tells you to send the grades, listen to him/her and do just exactly that.

Thanks.

But my guidance counselor doesn’t know how it will affect me. If I drop this course I will only officially have 2 AP courses on my schedule for entire high school. Because I was not able to get into 3 of the AP courses, I will self study for them for May. If I write a note about this to universities, will that be as good as taking the actual courses?

Colleges and universities like to see the words “Honors”, “AP”, and “IB” on your HS transcript because it tells them that you are pushing yourself academically in school. Whether or not you actually take the AP exams is up to you. It may be a waste of time, trouble, and money if the college/university that you are going to attend won’t give you placement/credit for the score you think you will earn. On the other hand, if you will get placement/credit, it can greatly accelerate your college program so the time, trouble, and money are well invested.

Make sure your counselor knows which colleges/universities you are applying to, and the major field you are interested in. He/she should know if admission at those institutions would require that you complete the “most rigorous” program at your HS, how many honors/AP/IB courses normally constitute the “most rigorous” program at your HS. You may in fact be well on track for the colleges/universities that you are interested in.

Thank you so much for your help. However since I am from Canada, my guidance counselor is not much of a help with American ivy admissions, even while she knows what universities I am applying to.

My school only offers 8 AP courses. Since I do know that others in my year are applying to the same schools as I am and some have 3, 4, even 5 AP courses on their senior course list, would I be telling colleges that I am lazy as I only have 2 (if I do decide to drop this class)?

Does having a 80 on an AP Lit class say “This student cannot handle college level, especially Ivy-level material”? Or would not “challenging myself” hurt me more?
