Low-Ball Job Offer

Yes, I agree. Supposedly the paycheck will be just a few days late, but legally, it seems they would have to reimburse him for travel and classes he paid for. Then again, if they have no money, there is no money.

My niece’s BF worked for a startup that wasn’t paying him AT ALL, but supposedly he was “building equity” in the company. He was able to find a better job that hired him 1st as a contractor and then as a full-time employee. I’ll hope the fairy dust the worked on him and got him a job that is actually paying him will fall on your S2.

Actually, the law is extremely harsh on employers who don’t pay their employees. In many states, board members and top financial executives can have personal liability for unpaid wages, especially if they do anything to divert funds away from payroll to other uses. So even if a company is in extreme financial distress, current wages tend to get paid, and when they can’t be paid the company shuts down. (Doesn’t necessarily apply to expense reimbursements, pensions, or deferred compensation, however.)

Good to know, JHS. I would think they’d have to pay for the air travel and required classes he paid for out of his own pocket, but sounds like the paycheck comes first.

I hope it works out for him @busdriver11. Let’s get that mojo going!

@Magnetron What year is she is college? Unfortunately a lot if the zoos have a preference for rising seniors.

I don’t know if the opportunity is still open but ARCAS in Guatemala is looking for a biology intern at their wildlife rehabilitation center. You can find them on the internet and on their Facebook page. Even if she doesn’t get the internship the volunteer positions are substantive. I can personally vouch for them. My daughter spent 6 weeks at their turtle location and my friend’s son spent three weeks at the jungle locations. Her experiences there have always come up in internship interviews.

In the internship sub forum I posted some weeks ago all the zoo and related internships that I had stockpiled. You should also check the AZA job board for current openings. My daughter started interviewing in January. The zoo in Duluth may still be accepting applications. It is worth a call. They are AZA.

Our state has a wildlife rehabilitation center that takes as many volunteer hours as they can get especially in the avian nurseries. Is there a facility near you?

I’ll keep an eye out for her.

I’d like a fairy dust booster shot for ds2, please. He texted the guy he’d most like to work for to see if there had been any movement. They guy didn’t respond, but he did retweet ds2 later in the day. That was encouraging to my millennial. Oh, millennials.

Yeah, I don’t get the whole tweet thing. haha. Consider the fairy dust sprinkled and mojo working for @“Youdon’tsay”'s son.

@Magnetron Alaska SeaLife center takes a large number of interns every year. She could shoot them an email and see if there have been any spaces opening up. Housing is provided.

Thanks @“Snowball City” (and all the wonderful people here helping and supporting my sweet D), still nothing yet, and she is a senior, graduating in December. She had one place tell her they would have hired her except her school year starts mid-August and they need someone until September 1. She has applied to a bunch more recently through the AZA and from recommendations through this thread. If nothing comes up this week or next, she will probably go down to CA (CaliCaliCali) for a couple months and live with my parents. There is a very small rehab place near them that takes volunteers.

My wife once wrote a recommendation that said, essentially, if you don’t have an opening for this person hire her anyway and she will make you realize how much you needed someone like her. I feel a lot of the kids of parents in this thread would be the same, just need that chance.

Cali!

Fairy dust still working!!! She finished finals this morning and got a call this afternoon. Training starts Tuesday.

May this thread live on.

This makes me happy! I love this thread. Congratulations @Magnetron!

Now let’s madly sprinkle that fairy dust on @“Youdon’tsay”'s and @busdriver11’s sons.

Well, my son did receive his paycheck, but hasn’t been reimbursed for his training yet. Supposedly it is to come. And the part of the company that he’s working for is making money, so I think he might be safe. Seems they would want to keep people in the section that is producing for them. I’m just a worrier, making backup plans to the backup plans, but I know everyone doesn’t function like that. Hoping it will all be okay.

On another note, my oldest son just gave his two week notice to quit his job (without another one lined up!). But he has years of experience as a backend software engineer, and enough money saved to live on his own for a very long time. Apparently he has a plan…can’t wait to hear it.

Where is that glass of wine? I wish I had the stress free life of my dogs. Always someone to worry about!

" I’m just a worrier, making backup plans to the backup plans, but I know everyone doesn’t function like that."

Not a bad trait to have in your line of work, @busdriver!

Maybe that’s why, doschicos. I never want to wait till something bad happens, and then think, “Now what do I do?” I think to my son that seems depressing, but it comforts me to have planned. It actually helps me not to worry.

Yes, I’m generally an over-planner by nature. That’s how I sleep well at night. Our kids are much more able to roll with what comes their way while I like to have plans and back up plans.

Bus, you are not alone! I worry about our kiddos, too. All. The. Time.

@Magnetron - fingers crossed!

Same here. I think I was always a little this way but I think part of it comes with being a mom/parent.

I’m also a member of the worrier club. :frowning:
