Low-Ball Job Offer

I love this thread. I hope the job finding fairies continue to sprinkle their magic dust to make all job wishes come true!

It’s like the cyber equivalent of burying a St. Joseph statue to sell a house.

Success!!! Since December, my DS has submitted 15 Summer Intern applications, had 10 calls/interviews, 7 no, 2 still pending and yesterday a YES!!
I am over the moon happy for him and so relieved. He his reaching out to one of the pending in which had a second interview last week just in case that is an option before he gives his reply on Monday. There really is fairy dust on this thread

I’m so happy for him! And you!

Congrats!!!

Given my track record of killing threads, this one is probably played out, but thought I would give it a shot anyway hoping for some vestigial mojo. We just heard D contacted all 30 of the places she applied for internships and is shut out. Twenty-five of them were for unpaid positions, willing to work for free, and still nothing. She will be contacting more these last two weeks.

She is a junior, smart as heck (96 on her O Chem 2 final and it brought her average down) and capable of physical output that would break most humans. We totally lack connections in her field that relies on connections, and she seems to have missed out on forming them herself at college, but were hoping her resume would be enough. We cannot afford the big pay-your-own way ones. A bunch of “your qualifications are great, but” so far. She could really use a break.

Sorry to hear this, Magnetron. Has she turned to profs and the career center? Is there research or related work she could do on campus?

She could get a job, but her goals (shoveling animal poop at a zoo) have been pretty specific, have a low barrier, and continue to be very competitive. As a squeamish person, i don’t get the appeal but it is oversubscribed to the point of the places telling students to not contact them.

@Magnetron, Sending good vibes her way. Something will come together. Best of luck!

@Magnetron, sent you a pm.

I’m sorry @Magnetron. I hope she is able to find something and don’t give up hope. In a competitive field that relies on connections, you have to be remarkably persistent until you find the opening.

Where is she located? My daughter worked at a wildlife center in CA that offers an intensive summer internship. It is (unfortunately) unpaid.

Thanks @3girls3cats . We’re up in WA but she applied extensively in CA. We have relatives near Chico, right in SF practically walking distance to the zoo, and Monterey. If you pm me specifics I can send it along to her.

Not trying to jinx this thread, but, :frowning:

After all this and my son finally getting hired two months ago, the company just announced they’re having problems and delaying people’s pay and reimbursements. They owe him $5K now for a paycheck and training he was supposed to be reimbursed for. He’s the last person hired. Could he really be laid off so soon?

We were so happy. Now, just worried. I knew the fact that everyone in the family was well, happy, and employed just couldn’t last.

One more glass of wine. :open_mouth:

Keeping fingers crossed @busdriver11 that this is just a hiccup or will lead to a better position for your S!

I once started a great job a few weeks ahead of a massive layoff. I got the pink slip, called my boss, who said ignore it, she was going to bat for me. That is what I hope happens for your son, Busdriver, sending good waves in his direction.

(The commitment from the boss, I mean. Not the false alarm. I realize my original wording left confusion.)

Oh my… deep breaths…

@busdriver11 Sorry to hear that! We’ll get this thread’s mojo working again for your son.

Consider this post a sending of good vibes in his direction and a sprinkle of fairy dust.

Yes. Deep breaths. It hasn’t happened yet.

Funny though, I was just talking to my sister, and mentioned that it was just this little snapshot in time, how everybody was doing really well, and there was nobody I had to worry about.

That didn’t last very long. I don’t have the heart to tell my husband, why worry him. Especially since every now and then he gets this huge smile on his face and says, “Why am I so happy? Because S2 has a job!” :frowning:

Get that mojo going! This wasn’t the dream job, so I’m hoping that if he gets laid off, there will be the opportunity for a better one.

Not getting paid is a huge red flag. The good news is he has a job. He should start looking for a job asap while he still has a job. There is no reason for him to stay on because if he were to let go it is not likely he will get a severance. Any employer would understand why he would look for a new job after 2 months if he is not getting paid.

I am keeping my fingers crossed for busdriver11’s son.
