I’m going into my senior class in September and we all know what that means- preparing for college!
And well I have an issue in hand.
I never really volunteered or done much extra curriculars in high school. Had to do with shyness and not much interest
What I have done is
Marching Band from 2014-present
Volunteer at local library
Volunteer at Relay for life
Volunteer at NYSSMA
Played in Pit Ochestra in high school
(Looking to volunteer at a hospital for fall.)
This really isn’t much and also heavily music influenced. Idk what else to really do and if I try anything now it will just look like to colleges that I’m trying stuff last minute to look good kind of thing.
Anyway I could work with this? Because I have the commitment down and it has been a passion. But you know it could be way better for sure.
I have a similar problem, too. I have no volunteer hours at all. We both have little time left. I’ve been focusing on getting my standardized tests up, since that is something we still have time to act upon.
What tier of colleges are you aiming for? Many mid-level schools would much rather see high stats than a plethora of ECs. I wouldn’t worry unless you’re aiming for top-20s.
I plan on signing up to be a tutor in the fall as a last resort kind of thing. Maybe that can help you out, too? I would do tutoring in a subject you are really confident in. For me, I’d feel proficient in Algebra 1.
Personally for me, I wouldn’t be a great tutor. Like I can understand well but when it comes to demsotrating I’m a total mess lol. If anything though if I could I would do history. But I do hope that works out well for u cause learning math is very important and needed !!
That’s very true! I’ve been looking on to fix that myself. For me, my sat score is considered pretty low and it’s been kinda annoying to try and improve, though I only took twice and improved my essay score a lot. Gl with that and take time to prepare. With that we all can improve really well
You don’t need outside organizations to prove interest and you don’t need a lot of volunteer hours either. My son was an artist who was also heavily into computers (graphics, programming, etc). He used his app to get across a snapshot of who he is. His stats were solid, but not super hgh like many you see on CC. He was accepted to every school he applied to (including several SUNYs) and now happily attends his favorite SUNY.
When my son was applying he made a list of all his activities. Then he ranked them by how much he liked them. He didn’t use everything, just the things that painted a picture of who he was. Figure out what you want colleges to know about you and use that. Photography and drawing are great activities. Find a place on your app to include them.
Some people are introverts – we get our energy from being alone – so while you’ll undoubtedly outgrow your shyness you may find that you prefer solo activities. There’s nothing wrong with that. Use what you have to pull together a solid app. Focus on affordability and fit. And let us know how it turns out. Good luck.
