I’ve always been an “outstanding” student at my school. I’ve kept attractive grades until this year. My attendance dropped too. I had mono, a broken ankle, got my braces off and my fair share of strep throat. Needless to say, my grades and attendance went way down. I even failed a class due to my attendance (it was a college class that I’m going to retake)! I want to go to a college in California, but I’m nervous that I won’t be accepted because of my awful year! I’ll graduate with my associates degree, so technically I’ll be a transfer. Are they still going to look at my sophomore year and reject me? I haven’t taken my SAT or ACT yet. Do I still have a chance at UCLA or Stanford? PLEASE HELP!
Not sure what is your school standing in this post, are you in Community College or you are an HS student taking College Courses? Why didn’t you take SAT or ACT? What are your stats in HS? or in College? Do you expect Stanford to take in a student who has an F on his record? What do you want a stranger on the net to advice you without any hard numbers?
If you have earned your associates during dual enrollment you may still be a freshman applicant, unless you earned additional college credit after high school graduation. For highly selective colleges, your admissions chances are better as a freshman than a transfer. However, this isn’t your choice; you must follow the rules as stated on each college website as to your status.
It’s impossible to chance you without grades and test scores, but that F is not a good look. College students need to drop classes before they fail them. With medical issues, you could have sought a medical withdrawal or worked with your teachers and professors for extra time to finish as well.
At any rate, never assume that you can squeak into elite schools. Always have safety schools on your list.
If you are OOS for UCLA, make sure you and your parents can afford $$60K/year? No financial aid for OOS students. If you do not make up the F grade by the time applications are due, your chances are slim to none for these schools. Also as stated in the above posts, if you are still in HS with college credit, then you would apply as a Freshman not a transfer.
So what are your stats? EC’s and test scores?
You might see whether you can get a retroactive withdrawal from the course that you failed for medical reasons. You would need a doctor’s note at a minimum, and it might not be possible, but I would at least try.
You haven’t given us much information, but frankly UCLA and Stanford would have been long shots or impossible for most students even without a bad semester and an F. You might need to go to a good in-state university for undergrad and strive for UCLA or Stanford for graduate school.
