Low GPA, high ACT?

I have a 2.6 GPA and 31 ACT. My question is, will my ACT score make up for my GPA? My GPA is low because of a medical problem in 10th grade that caused me to miss 4 months of school…will schools take that as an excuse? the schools I am applying to are:
University of Arizona
Creighton
University of Minnesota
Iowa State
University of Washington Seattle
McGill University
thank you!

I’m applying to the U of MN and based on this chart you are a “maybe” <a href=“University of Minnesota: Acceptance Rate, SAT/ACT Scores”>http://collegeapps.about.com/od/GPA-SAT-ACT-Graphs/ss/university-of-minnesota-admission-gpa-sat-act.htm</a></p>

Know that test scores NEVER replace GPA. It’s just another beneficial quality.

However, please mention your absence for school, along with that it was a medical condition. Colleges will take that into consideration during the application process, but you must show that you can improve from that low GPA (i.e. that you can raise it before you apply/attend).

Looking at those list of schools, you should be fine. Write strong essays, and convince them that you are serious about getting a higher education.

McGill will not take anything but the numbers into account. There might be some leeway when it comes to SAT IIs, but that’s all.

What was your Grade 11 GPA?

What state do you live in? University of Washington is probably a reach for you if you aren’t in-state. They waitlisted my son, who had a 31 ACT with a 3.3-3.4 unweighted GPA and a weighted GPA over 4.0. We were surprised, because we thought it was a solid match for him. Maybe U. of Oregon instead?

Tomsrofboston - My 11th grade GPA was 3.3

woogzmama - I am from Minnesota…how does UO compare to the UW?

I’m pretty sure that University of Oregon is a little less competitive for admissions than Washington. Oregon has a 73% acceptance rate, according to the last figures I saw. Washington has a 55% acceptance rate. Your ACT score is just at the top of the median range for Washington; it’s well above the 75th percentile for Oregon.
