Hi y’all! So I did really poopy in college, and up until this semester, had a sub-3.0 GPA. Now, it’ll be at least above 3.0, after this semester, probably around a 3.08. I have 3 out of 4 grades for this semester – the last of which I’m on track for A/A- in. If I’m applying to general corporate jobs, am I basically shut out from things based on my GPA? Where should I apply for work?
I went to an Amherst, Pomona, Williams, Middlebury type school (one of those 4)
No, you will certainly find opportunities. At worst, you’ve ceded some of the advantages that comes with attending a top flight school. But certainly not all of them. These schools will always open doors for you, and there will be a time – after your first job, for example – when few if any will ask about your college GPA. Even graduate schools will take a second look once you’ve proven yourself in the workplace. But you’ll always be a WASP graduate.
I did pretty well in the world (better than most… not as good as some), and my college GPA was about the same as yours but from a much less prestigious school. Work hard. Learn from your mistakes. You’ll do great.
What type of corporate jobs are you hoping for? There is not a huge need for biology majors in corporate America. Most of the scientific jobs would require a PhD or masters.
But you could potentially use the degree in sales, marketing, etc for a science based company.
If you can keep your GPA over 3.0, that would help, since 3.0 is a common cut-off GPA among employers deciding which college student applicants to interview.
Have you taken economics? statistics? Any internship experience? Good grades in writing-intensive classes?
For law school, GPA is king and your college’s name won’t help much, so that’ll be a huge hurdle.
There are plenty of jobs on the sales/marketing side that hire people with science degrees. This is often a good way to get some business experience before going on to get a masters or MBA. Most of the sales people have undergrad business degrees and don’t understand the science. So having a science degree will help you to stand out.
