Congratulations on overcoming your mental health challenges and making the most out of your high school education – that really bodes well for your future. However, Bates will be a tough admit with your GPA and course rigor, even if you do have a compelling story and an upward trend. Bates will look for 4 years each in all of the core subjects - you’ve got that in math and science, but not in English and social studies. They’ll prefer honors and AP courses where available. You don’t have to report class rank (although your counselor likely will give at least approximate information to that effect, which should provide context to explain your grades and achievements), but your GPA will probably indicate where you stand.
I agree with others that you should find an essay topic that reveals something unexpected and unusual or quirky about you – I also think it’s okay if you discuss mental health challenges in the “anything else we should know?” section, and your counselor can also mention it, with the emphasis on how much you’ve improved since then.
In the meantime, I think it would be a good idea to come up with a list of schools that have some of the same qualities as Bates but might be a more manageable admit for you, with your record. Can you tell us more about what draws you to Bates?
Some ideas for alternatives, depending on your geographic, academic, or other preferences: Muhlenberg, Dickinson, Beloit, Kenyon, Occidental, St. Olaf, Gettysburg, Allegheny, Juniata, Connecticut College, Lawrence, Lewis and Clark, Whitman, Hobart and William Smith. Some might still be reachy, but less so than Bates. Do any of these sound appealing?
