would a low GPA (4.6/5 W, for instance) but compensated for by a high class rank? (top 5% at a competitive public school)

also, will great EC’s and essays do the same?

What’s your gpa uw? Great ec’s, teacher/gc recs, essays, and well-roundedness will always help you out. But admissions is partly like gambling, you and everyone else have a chance, and most prople won’t be able to tell you what that chance is. Ranking high is very important, as is gpa, but if you are from a competitive school, as you said you were, a good rank will outweigh a lower gpa. Just my 2 cents( by the way I’m only a h.s. student so don’t fully base your opinion on my reply.

If that’s a low GPA, then I’m screwed.

Uw –> ~3.9

Are you from Canada or the states? If your from Canada I can’t help you, but in the states that’s a good enough gpa in my opinion for most Ivy league schools.

I had a 3.96 UW and was flat-out rejected. I’m even a decendent of Harvard’s first president.

Don’t do what I did though: I play trumpet in school, and when my interviewer asked me if I wanted to play it in college. I told him probably not, but I wanted to play electric base guitar. Went for uniqueness, but he didn’t like that so much.

Rank matters more than GPA.

no actually, according to the US news ranking, GPA matters more than your class rank. I think that’s BS.

The bottom line is that both rank and GPA matter. If you are unhooked applicant that goes to a non-magnet public school, it is very unlikely that you will be accepted without a 3.9 and top 1% rank. It is essentially impossible to be accepted without a 3.7 and top 5% rank.

3.7?
so unweighted GPA matters…?
(I have close to 3.9)

Ha, at my non-magnet public school, only one kid is in the top 1%. In fact, hes the only one in the top 5% too. Though since my class only has 17, he can really only claim top 6%

And hes going to the gotta-be-a-dumbass-to-not-get-in state school, Montana State, so go figure

it is a great school is some fields though, but still

In Canada we don’t have GPA. And from what I’ve heard 90% average is equivalent to about a 3.7 and that is considered very good in Canada. Good enough to get into any Canadian University (apart from a few programs at different universities) From what I’ve heard and seen on this board, Americans seem to get much better marks than Canadians and I don’t think that is because they are smarter! I think that there is clearly a difference in the marking, obviously I’m talking generally and this doesn’t apply to a lot of people here who have good marks, and this to me and I’ve heard this from many people that it is harder to get the same grades in Canada that people do in the US.

Well, we don’t have to learn everything in french too. I have alot of Canadian friends, and they hate having french

I have a 4.0 but so do many others in my school… my courseload is technically the hardest (6 APs as junior) but we don’t rank; if rank matters more it would be kind of bad for me because I can only officially boast of a “top decile” rank, though my QPA is a 4.6 weighted on a scale of 5 AP and 4.5 honors.

I’m interested to see what you guys decide in the end… how do colleges adjust weights for different schools, and how do they figure out a student’s merit if he/she attends a non-ranking/decile school?

If our transcript only includes our weighted GPA, would colleges really take the time to calculate our UW?

Same question, since it pertains to me

I go to a relatively competitive school, nothing extraordinary, but nothing easy, and have a low GPA

So basically, if I show that I went back to my usual standards in senior year, will they understand? My family was going under a lot of stress concerning an abortion, and it seriously affected my grades. Do you think I am automatic reject?

I am sorry if I sound stupid, or annoying, but I am worried and need someone to help me.

Its around a 3.5 ish

BUMP , anyone

hmm…that is a heavy issue and might be difficult to write about, but you could try explaining it to them? do you have a hook? if not, then i would say don’t count on it (…as no one should, because only 1/10 get in anyway) best of luck!!

Holy ■■■!!!

I can’t believe I said abortion, I meant adoption.

I explained it to them in the short answer. But do you think it will get me automatically rejected? Many Vals and Sals get rejected so…

Does knowing 6 languages count as a hook?

I am just going to repost this on the College Admissions thread, I don’t know how to move it. I hope thats fine.
