low sat1 scores, yet to give sat2's

international student, applying for fall2013

sat: 770/740/550 m/cr/w :2060

1) how much does the writing section matter? the rumour goes that writing really isn’t given much weightage by many colleges

2)due to circumstances (a long story) i got only one shot at the sat1, which i gave in november and which got me the scores posted above.

i will be giving the 3 sat2’s required by top tier universities in dec.

i had already planned on giving 3 more sat2’s in jan and submit them to whichever colleges accept them.(most of the colleges i am going to apply to accept the scores;i have contacted and corresponded with them, it’s a fact. plz don’t debate on this point)

my question is: should i cancel the jan sat2’s and retake the sat1 instead? i barely had 20 days to study for it the first time around … i am confident that i am capable of 2300+

plz reply, i need to make a decision fast…

Some colleges ignore the writing score. These include Georgetown and MIT. That said, if you’re planning to apply to very selective colleges your writing score and your total score may prove to be a handicap. On the web you can easily find the score range of accepted students. Focus on the median. If you’re significantly below that then retaking the SAT is a better option than taking 3 additional SAT 2.

Thinking about this in a slightly different way, colleges for which a median score of 2060 is very good are unlikely to be the ones that require or expect multiple SAT 2 scores. And colleges that expect a median score of 2200 are less likely to look at your application (or your additional SAT 2 scores) with much depth unless you have very strong ECs.

Fortunately writing is the one SAT section that you can almost always improve with study.

thanks for replying!
very logical, especially the 2nd paragraph of it.

i do have fairly strong EC’s…
but with top tier colleges which expect 2200+, would extra sat2’s have been an added bonus? damn… i missed out on capitalizing on that opportunity. being an international student, there is cut-throat competition… every perk counts.
you can’t give sat1 and sat2 on the same day can you?

I have come across this “academic index” in which colleges rank you on a 1-9 scale. it is said that although they might be impressed, no matter how many sat subject scores you submit, they will only consider the top 2/3 (as per requirements)
[The Academic Index - Ivy League Admissions Key? - College Confidential](http://www.collegeconfidential.com/academic_index.htm)

is this true? the issue of whether the academic index formula is used or not is quite controversial.

how would you suggest i go about improving the writing section?

plz reply, thx

bump… I need advice!
