Low verbal GRE score for genomics/bioengineering ph.d?? retake advice plz

hello,

i got 550 on verbal, 790 on math, and 4.5 on writing.
i definitely think i can take it again to get it over 600 on verbal but i am not sure if it’s worthy. also i didnt get to finish a sentence in a writing due to the time limit. i personally think it’s pretty low for schools im applying…

im applying to phd programs in genomics/bioengineering/bioinformatics (mit, duke, jhu, harvard, oxford). most of them have deadlines around december 10th. what about retaking it in mid-november?? (GRE says the schools get scores in 10 days unless they are getting scores in old-fashioned mediums). i wont be able to study alot but will be able to steadily build up more vocabs.

some places say 550 is a good enough score for my areas but i dont think that’s still true for top programs?

help me out :)

How big of an improvement do you think you can get on verbal? 600 vs. 550 is not much. 700 vs. 550 might be worth the cash. How about math? 790 is excellent, but what if you don’t get your 800 on the second try? Also, how is your GPA and research?

I agree with ^ post.

If your target is a 600… I would not retake the GRE.
It would be a different story if you get V 650-700+ on the practice exams.

i can probably get 600 without studying. and if i work for it, 650 is possible i think. im pretty confident about a math section. but more than that would be a stretch

GPA is good but research is mediocre. i guess im trying to see if 650 vs 550 is a big difference… help please. should i give it a try? and is the mid November too late for gre (to apply in this december)?

how do top schools look at GRE and what’d be like a bottom threshold.

any opinion on difference between 550 and 650 at top engineering/biomedicine programs?

I think you’re underestimating how difficult (and random) the GRE verbal section can be. People study for months and if they are unfortunate to get a string of words they don’t know then they come out with a low score. You can predict quant scores…verbal isn’t as easy…
