Stats please? have a junior who’s EXTREMELY interested in applying next year - seems like a perfect fit. However, at a very tough high school (e.g., AP taught to get a 5, most kids get 5s/4s even if a B in the class; honors classes first 2 years extremely demanding). Taking 2 AP in 11th, prob 3 in 12th, so expect 5 APs, unweighted GPA only 3.5-3.6 range, cum weighted maybe 3.7-3.75, but was 3.9 for 10th, maybe 4.0-4.1 for 11th (weak 9th grade is pulling down cum). Not a lot of leadership, but strong commitment to multiple activities (sports, volunteer work, other activities which take up significant time). Expect 32-33 ACT based on baseline test. Trying to get a sense of whether LMU is a total reach (will try regardless, but want to keep expectations in check and be realistic about chances because there are so many aspects - academics, professors, internship opps, community/types of kids, location - that make it an amazing fit; worried about the high GPA bar though).
Son accepted yesterday English program! Coming from a high-rated public so cal hs, is 3.94 UW, 4.41 W, 7 APS, strong writer for multiple outlets in high school and online, founder and runs a finance club, basketball 3 years now coaching as a paid gig, on-going volunteer mentor and tutor for english/writing/ reading, homecoming king, 3 college business courses, summer finance/ investing course. Finally, very strong letters of rec (I believe, can’t read them) from teachers.
I think your child will have an excellent chance if they choose to ED, and a solid target if they choose to EA. Good luck!
I agree with the poster that said ED would give them a very good chance and in EA it could be a target. I would add that my impression is the major/school and the essay can also play a role in admissions.
Is your child is looking for a specific major/school at LMU or would they apply undecided? Also, beyond the stats, I believe they are looking for students that value the mission of the school so being able to make that tie in the essay in a “show, not just tell” narrative would help.
Thank you - very helpful and good points (yes, specific major, and applying to an internship starting this summer that is aligned with her interests, so hopefully, she’ll get that!). It’s comforting to hear!
Thank you for sharing - very impressive!
Son deferred for SFTV. Anyone know stats on how many get in to SFTV after being deferred?
1-3 maybe, usually none. Sorry
Has LMU posted the admitted student days yet? If not, does anyone know when they have typically done them in the past?
I was able to find this info for all the other 15 schools my daughter applied to, but not LMU. Hoping someone knows. We are down near campus after xmas so we are going to walk around, but would be great to go to an admitted students day.
OK, so now that my daughter is IN and excited about the possibility of LMU I need to talk $$$… COA went up $6K from last year and $3K from the year before…$9K in 2 years. wow! USC’s housing is only $12K a year, why is LMUs $20K? I feel like that $9Kx4 years is going to put this one out of reach for us even with merit. I think LMU is going to be way above UC cost. Anyone else feeling the same or am I being pessimistic? We won’t qualify for fin aid, but our daughter wants to go to law school so we told her UC cost or less…
D24 admitted EA to SFTV for animation.
4.57 W, 4.0 UW, 12 Honors, 6 AP
Congratulations to your daughter! I have a freshman son mechanical engineering major at LMU and he is very happy. With regard to USC, you are not including the meal plan which is $7,290. All in, it is comparable to LMU. There are four meal plans to choose from at LMU and I believe their estimate for food includes the highest plan. It is beneficial to look at the Common Data Set to see the average financial aid offered. Best of luck and congratulations again!
We also debated the UC’s vs LMU last year. UC tuition is set for 6 years from the time you start so will not go up during your college years. Ave right now is about $16k a year tuition. Hopefully you get good merit as LMU is a beautiful school with some good programs but hard to pay so much for undergrad.
Really? I read somewhere else that they only take a few on early action and then make the majority of the decisions in Spring. But, good to know. Bummed.
Really appreciate the reply. CDS gives a bit of hope with merit at $40K, however she went to public HS (after K-8 catholic) so I have a strong feeling the larger merit likely goes to catholic HS kids. I guess only time will tell. If it is meant to be it will be. We are going on campus next week for the first time so hopefully we don’t all fall in love…haha. She got into SDSU last night which made the discussion again of “if you don’t get enough merit you can’t go” conversation much easier to swallow. She knows it is the reality but hard when you get in somewhere really nice and have to decline. Thanks again!

It could be different from the year I applied, but I only know a few film students at the moment who were taken off the waitlist. Doesn’t mean it’s not worth hoping for and don’t let me just squash any hope in it!
I recommend always contesting the merit aid. EA gets an automatic like 2K and ED I think 4K in aid, and then any need based and merit scholarships. If she did any competitive things or such I would bring that up in an appeal letter to the FA office, along with the arguement along the lines of “This is my top choice school but I realistically cannot afford it and may be forced to accept this lower (exact number) offer from another school if the financial aid cannot help me realistically enroll. I would love to make this work, as this has been my top choice for years, so if there is any way to raise my aid I would greatly appreciate it.” But you know…better haha.
We are in the same boat. Son was accepted and loved his LMU visit. But without a very large merit scholarship, it’s probably not feasible. Looking at the 22-23 CDS, I see that the avg non-need based aid is only ~$11k.
