Thank you but it isn’t a waitlist though. There is a difference between a waitlist and being deferred. Deferred is we haven’t made a decision on you yet and want to consider you with all of the regular decision applicants. In other words, you are still in the running and a decision has not been made yet. Waitlist is after they have made all of their decisions and add students to the waitlist.
I don’t know why I read it as waitlist! Haha. The school doesn’t publicize deferral percentages by major but I have seen some people online at least claim they got in through a deferral in past years.
My daughter got in Early Action! I would love for her to attend LMU but we are middle income educators sending 2 kids to college. Need to wait on the financial and merit aid to make any decisions. Big question, does applying to the honors program provide any additional scholarships? My daughter is on the fence about applying. Any thoughts?
We had the same question.
FAQ has the following “Admittance into the University Honors Program does not guarantee a scholarship and applying for Honors does not qualify you for more financial aid in terms of University tuition and fees. It does, however, open up possibilities for future scholarships and funding for undergraduate research”
https://academics.lmu.edu/honors/prospective/faq/
For financial aid, hopefully you saw the email that early action admits should complete the LMU Need based application by Jan 15 and there would be a later deadline in the spring when the FAFSA needs to be completed (since it’s been delayed).
Just an FYI–my D23 attended a public high school, was accepted EA and received the presidential merit award ($30,000) on 02/03/23 plus 2k for EA application.
She was later accepted to their honors program but did not receive any additional merit $.
Good luck—the waiting game isn’t easy!
That is so awesome. So she was accepted in Dec 2022 and then received the financial award in Feb? Our son was accepted last month Dec 2023 and LMU said financial award info would be given in Feb 2024. He is from a public hs also with good stats, hoping!!
With COA of $85K, even with the highest award of $30K that is still $55K a year and there is no tuition lock so they are increasing every year. Does the merit award also increase year over year? I am assuming no. We went on campus the day after xmas. They wouldn’t let us get out of our car as the campus was closed for the holiday(which felt very elite…) It is a nice looking campus, but with this high of a price tag my daughter still prefers SDSU w/ honors and is holding out for a lottery win of a UC. She will still apply to the honors just in case some miracle happens with merit, but it has fallen lower on her list now that she is in at SDSU which will be much less expensive. Good luck to everyone!
I believe they take security seriously, and it is about security, not elitism. We toured this summer and had to check in at the security booth, similar to USC. However, LMU felt far more secure than USC.
I can attest it is a security reason. Students are still living there and the campus takes it very seriously when questionable people are on campus. It is not about elitism. We live next to areas of less than friendly homelessness and the campus does a good job at making the students living on campus feel safe. Not to say the area around it is as dangerous as USC, but no one wants creepy people walking on campus. PSafe is quick to address anyone who students report as creepy and not a part of LMU.
Interesting. We stayed across the street at hotel June and the neighborhood felt extremely safe and controlled. SDSU is in a much more urban environment and isn’t “locked down” with private security gates, etc. Just my opinion and I am sure it does help the students to feel more safe, however in my opinion not the real world.
Hi,
My son got accepted on Dec 19th into the BA Theatre program and was thrilled. I would guess he’s above GPA 3.8, at least 3 AP courses taken so far, 35 on the ACT and he’s got leadership demonstrated. Waiting on merit scholarship. I’ve seen comments by others that LMU’s merit scholarships aren’t as generous as other schools. He’s got a very nice offer from a competing school in the LA area. We shall see. Good luck to all of your sons/daughters!
How do you know that the highest merit award is $30K? I thought the Arrupe Award can be as high as full ride.

Maybe scholarship information will also come out earlier than mid-Feb?
Congratulations to your daughter!! Is LMU her top choice?
