This is for everyone who applied for the Honors Program at UMich LSA after January 22, but prior to February 26. The decision deadline is March 21, so it’s coming up! I responded to the prompt about words that bounce. What did you other Honors applicants discuss? What are your thoughts on the upcoming notice?

I used an extended metaphor comparing words to projectile motion (a topic covered in my AP physics class). I discussed how many words hardly make into the air, nor do they travel a great horizontal distance. But words with great conviction and depth and what not have an impressive initial velocity, and so on and so forth. Then I used some historical references as examples. So, in a way I discussed how words literally bounce, but of course, it was just metaphorical. What did you say about zero?

@qrarose that sounds really interesting! I wrote mine on the zero option. My essay was kind of an amalgam of ideas, really. Lots of philosophical stuff revolving around nothingness and such.

@tspro2014 thanks, yours too! So I’m guessing you applied EA to make it by the second deadline? Is UMich one of your top choices if you get Honors? (Or without also?)

I wrote on the prompt “can economic equality and entrepreneurialism coexist” and had a blast, as I want to major in polysci and economics. I argued that it can’t, because they counteract each other and that economic equality as a whole can’t ever exist. I’ve already enrolled, so I’m really hoping I get into honors, it appealed to me ever since I started looking for colleges.

I greatly considered turning in an essay for that prompt because I also am looking at majoring in econ, along with an environmental science (geology most likely). And, wow, I hope you get in too. Would you still be happy with UMich if you did not get in the honors program?

Yeah I’d still be happy, I’d just prefer the honors community. I plan on doing an honors thesis, so if this round doesn’t work I can always apply again my junior year.

@qrarose Yeah I applied EA and was admitted in December. Until very recently, U of M to me was always a great school but not one that I was really considering, since I didn’t want to spend too much money on UG, as I plan on going to medical school. However, I just received a scholarship, so the school is currently one of my top choices. I’d say getting into the honors program would definitely be great, but even if I don’t it wouldn’t affect my decision to attend too much.

That makes sense. I would still consider UMich even if I didn’t get into honors because it’s such a good school, but I feel like the honors community would work best for me, not only academically, but socially. I like the idea of being with a smaller group of people that will automatically have similar interests. The huge size of UMich isn’t exactly what I want, but I feel like honors would give me the best of both worlds… a school like UMich, a community like a liberal arts college. @tspro2014 Congrats on your scholarship by the way. Are you out of state?

@qrarose no I’m in state. And I definitely agree that having a small college experience would be a bonus, while still having the opportunity to be part of a huge student population.

For the prompt, I answered the one about words bouncing! It was one part philosophical and one part personal. I thought it was a pretty okay essay! I was going to do the one about zero, but it was quite difficult to come up with what to say.

I do have a question! Since the decision day is coming up (very very soon!), does anyone know what time it will be announced? A time frame would be nice. I just want to prepare myself in advance ahaha.

Applied for Ross Pre admit but haven’t heard anything back yet. Hope the second round of LSA honor release today will soothe me in some way or another.

I totally forgot about this thread. That sounds like a really different/interesting approach to a prompt that was probably meant for a humanities-based essay, qrarose.
Hopefully everyone gets the decision they were expecting today :)

Thank you! @Juniperus
I have a feeling it will be emailed in the early evening, just based on how these things tend to go. I’m going to check my email around 2 (I live in CA). Good luck to everyone!

Did most of you get an e-mail asking you to apply to honors or did you apply on your own? Are you all going to accept at Michigan or are you considering different options?
