LSA scholarship asking to list other institutions I'm considering

I’m currently filling out a LSA scholarship which has a part that goes please list other institutions (colleges, universities, etc.) on your short list of options other than the University of Michigan. I’m not sure if I should put a list of colleges to show that other schools are giving me money or if it’s better to just put none to show UofM is my top choice. I might be overthinking this, but I just want to make sure.

My guess is it’s more for them to know who they’re up against than counting.

But logically, in my mind at least, put no one - and they might feel - then we don’t have to give any.

Put down others - and they might think - we have to keep up with the Joneses.

On the other hand, they might think - no one - if we give them money, we have a better chance - vs. if others are giving, our price is so much higher, we won’t have a shot so give money to someone else.

I don’t know that you’ll ever know the right answer but I would personally do as they ask.

Call and ask. They are really nice. You can even just chat with them. I wouldn’t over think it. They aren’t comparing you. They won’t be over thinking it either. They have too many students that want your spot. Congratulations BTW.

Tactically, you want them to think that Michigan is one of your top choices, but faces strong competition from one or more other colleges, and that you have enough price sensitivity that additional scholarship money could tip your decision.

You do not want them to think that they are your unconditional top choice or no longer under consideration, where the scholarship will not affect whether you attend.

Thank you. Also to speak to them about this, should I call financial aid or a different department?

Should be the same department.

Make it clear your child wants to attend but you have to be able to afford the school, in not so many words.
