LSAT First Practice

I am a sophomore at U of Texas at Austin with a Double Major Economics/Asian Studies . I just took one of those practice tests that the testing companies set up so you can sign up for their course. This was a previously administered LSAT test. I have been interested in Corporate Law and had never previously looked at a LSAT exam. I happened to get a 163, I am aiming for top 10 school or top 20 for merit aid. Do you think I have a chance to increase my score the necessary 10-12 pts?
P.S I will probably take the LSAT next June.

Yes, you have a good chance. What was you M+V on the SATs?

It’s possible, but it won’t be easy. A 163 is a good starting point and, depending on your GPA, a mere 5 point increase would be enough would be sufficient to get you into a T10.

My M+V on SAT was a 1470. It seems the thing I need the most work on is Logical Reasoning, are there some good strategies to use when taking this portion of the test?

Logical Reasoning Bible.

If you mostly had issues with logical reasoning, it shouldn’t be too difficult to bring up your score with practice…I would buy a logic problem/puzzle magazine; you will find that the deduction questions on the lsat are trivial in comparison.

I think your goal should be 170+.

Eh, I don’t really buy into the supposed correlation of the SAT (or SAT Verbal) with the LSAT. The two test very different things, and the former is significantly easier than the latter.

I had EXTREMELY similar stats to you…I think with study you could easily improve to the high 160s, which with a good GPA puts you in-range for a T14 school. Beyond that, honestly, is luck: it’s easy to swing 5 points on practice tests just based on what questions are asked, and when you add nervousness into the equation on test day, I think the swing could be even greater.
