LSU for Engineering/Sciences and Music

We just recently moved to the South from the Midwest and are just getting to know the schools down here. How good of a program does LSU have in regards to Engineering/Sciences and Music? I have child interested in Engineering/Sciences and the other in Music-Flute Performance.

How odd you should ask that… since I have no idea about their engineering program but my husband is a PhD candidate in music composition and conducting at LSU.

Their music program’s pretty good… I don’t know much about the flute prof there, but the orchestra program is in a big state of flux right now. The orchestra director didn’t get tenure and so is going elsewhere, and it’s anybody’s guess what’s going to happen next year… Hopefully they’ll get someone good. The Symphonic Band is excellent and quite renowned, though, and Tiger Band is a really strong community full of really great folks, and she wouldn’t necessarily have to be a music major to get her fix.

LSU’s not as well-known in music as, say, Rice or CCM or Eastman or Rochester or some of 'em, but the program is steadily getting stronger.

Which engineering/science is she looking at?

It is my son who is interested in Chemical Engineering and Astrophysics. I have heard Katherine Kemler, flute professor at LSU is very reputable but was not sure of the rest of the music program.

As long as you’re in the area… (sorry, I can’t ever resist pitching my alma mater)… Do check out Rice! It’s only about five hours west of LSU. Leone Buyse is an amazing flute teacher (Itzhak Perlman sent his daughter to Rice to study with her!), the symphony rivals Chicago and London, and it’s the most supportive conservatory community you’d ever find… No cutthroat competition, just everyone supporting their colleagues and sincerely hoping that they do well. It’s a really special place. =)

Engineering and astrophysics are also fantastic here… NASA donated money a long while ago for the astro dept.'s building, and the three chemical engineering majors out of my pool of friends have gone on to work for Eli Lilly, Merck, and Halliburton KBR.

Okay, end aibarr’s Rice Infomercial. Anybody else know anything about LSU’s chem eng and astrophysics programs…? I’m pretty unfamiliar with 'em…

eletrical/computer engineering. Im gonna do both.
Im an international student. Those school are my back up instead of failing to get in to UCs school.
Are you guys have any idea about ranking? reputation? Area? Jobs after graduting( I wanna work in the US)? Campus life? …
