Lying on the Common Application?

I was in my school’s jazz band in ninth and tenth grade. Although we never actually performed, on the writing section of the application (where we were asked to elaborate on one of our extracurricular activities) I mentioned that we “occasionally performed before small audiences.”

In the unlikely chance that I am selected for verification of my ECs (and my band director is somehow contacted), do you think I’m a goner?

When you submit the application, you certify that all the information is true and accurate to the best of your knowledge. Lying about that statement is something that an admissions officer will care about.

Why lie? It’s not as if the admissions committee is going to make their decision based on that inane non-fact.

“But wait! It says here he occasionally performed before small audiences! I say we admit him!”
