M.S. to Ph.D in Civil Engineering?

Hello all,

I am currently an M.S. student in Civil Engineering and on course to graduate in December 2010. Lately I have been thinking of possibly going for a Ph.D. in CE with a concentration in structures. If I choose to, I am not sure if I would want to start immediately after finishing in December, or if I would want to work for a few years to obtain my P.E. license and then go for the doctorate.

So does anyone know what the typical process is for getting into a doctorate program, especially in engineering? Since I would already have my M.S., would this cut down on the coursework I would have to take?

Also, is the process of getting into an engineering doctorate program the same as for getting into an M.S. program? i.e. would I have to take the GRE again and go through the same admissions process, even if I apply to the same school that I’m currently at?

Regards,
