small admissions is a fun fiction book about prep school admissions, it’s set in new york and isn’t boarding but def applies to the BS admission process
I’d really suggest reading or listening to the book, it will serve you well as you move from high-school to college. I’d say the core message I took away is that the “average” part of any class is relatively easy to shape. (maybe 1/3) the others are much harder, sometimes it comes down a single line on the description of an activity, a feeling that an AO has about a student, ability to pay (unfortunately this still can’t be 100% dismissed), hooks (legacy, sports (big), demonstrated interested, if they think the student will yield, etc. Even the top schools (this is college) are admitting 3x the number of students that they need just to try and balance out yield. My biggest take away is that it seems that it is more about the small things – how committed was a student to one or two activities /vs/ a shopping list of 20, what do 3 or 4 years of grades and course selection say about a student /vs/ a test score. Do recommendations match the student narrative? Ex, interested in science, but the recommendation talks about how much the student loves art? Lots to unpack in that book, and I will likely read it again to catch some of small details. There is also a not -so-small amount of luck.
Thank you, I will look into it! I am really interested in admissions and the inside of the Admissions conversation so this really helps. Thank you so much!
Which campus ?
I note it has rightly been an influential book. People today will talk about concepts like colleges shaping classes, institutional priorities versus normal conceptions of merit, and why there is actually no such thing as a perfect applicant. Selingo isn’t the only one to ever discuss all that, but has been a big contributor.
I am leaning towards attending Andover, but I will decide after revisit day. How about you?

Right, he is the normal age for 8th grade. I mentioned SAT at 12, which was 7th grade - maybe that was distracting.
Just got it too!
For Andover’s revisit days, will there be a chance to shadow a current student?
Yes. And meet other dancers if your shadow person isn’t one. They shape the day around your interests.
