M211 and W131 questions

D is a HS senior. She has been admitted to IU. She is taking M211 calculus as a dual credit course (Advanced College Project) at her high school. One third of her IU grade will depend upon her final. She’s consistently earned A’s in the course, but that final will be important. IU sends the final to her school I believe, not her HS teacher. She’s hoping to begin her IU transcript with a nice solid 4.0 GPA. (That’s why she took the dual credit. She was taking the HS class anyway. She is exempt from M118/M119 because of SAT scores.) She will take W131 also.

We’ve found the M211 syllabus and some previous finals online already. Found the name of the textbook also. Are there any other supplemental materials available? I think I might have seen something about a CD? Are there any more recent past finals available somewhere? The latest one is 2005.

We’ve not looked for any W131 materials since the class has not started yet for her. Any advice here?

Can’t help you on the math other than to look at the site

As for W131, if your D isn’t majoring in english and is just looking forward to knocking off the class, I strongly suggest taking English W170 instead. It allows your daughter to take a specialized english class on topics she might find more interesting (I took reality television). Each professor has a specialized curriculum, and while the class is more intense academically, it has higher class GPA averages.

radron–appreciate the suggestion regarding W170, but she won’t need W131 at IU (SAT exemption). She’s taking it at High School instead of AP. One reason she’s taking it at her HS is because it should be an “A” on her IU transcript. For a relatively small cost for the credits, she/we are paying for her to start IU with a 4.0. She’ll have to maintain at least a 3.0 or 3.5 to keep her scholarship(s). The cost seems worth it to us.

ohhh ic ic. Maybe someone can chime in on their curriculum ; i’m not even sure if they’re standardized for every teacher. BTW, does your daughter have an email? I’ve been connecting to ambitious IU students from CC in real life. It makes for quirky, nerdy, fun friendships hahaha. Send me contact info at apexeffect@gmail.com

rrah, my son took W131 (ACP) in high school, and got the nice 4.0 to start on his IU gpa. They had progressively longer written assignments ending with a six or eight page cited paper, nothing unexpected, though I don’t know much about the course. I think the textbook was online. The course content is probably pretty standard across the high schools, as the instructors attend summer seminars on how to teach W131 at IUB and the regional campuses close to their high schools.

Your daughter is W131 exempt, so also be sure that she applies for the two-hour credit for ENG W143 based on sat scores. You need, from the COAS bulletin,

"2. Exemption with credit. Some students have an opportunity to receive College of Arts and Sciences credit. A student will be granted 2 credit hours of English W143 if the student has:

 1. a score of 670 or above on the SAT Critical Reading test, or 32 or above on the ACT English Composition section, or 4 to 5 on the Advanced Placement English Composition section, plus
 2. a score of 660 or higher on the SAT Writing Test, and if the student applies to the Department of English in Ballantine Hall 442. Students should also see “Special Note” under “Credit by Examination” in this Bulletin."

The COAS bulletin is a little vague (to me, at least) on whether a student can take W131 and still get the two credits for W143, but he got them after taking W131 in high school, getting 670+ critical reading and 660+ writing on the SAT, and applying for the W143 credit when he started in Fall 2008.

rrah,

I’m not familiar with anyone being exempted from M118/M119 based upon SAT scores. Where did you find that information?

Thanks in advance for any replies on this,

Calcruzer–I should have specified she will be in the COAS. I don’t know if Kelley allows this exemption.

On a side note, I could understand not exempting Kelley students from M118, but I personally think M119 should be exempt. Same thing for W131. Students, PLEASE NOTE, I am NOT saying Kelley has an exemption. I don’t know Kelley requirements well enough to make that statement.

In the COAS bulletin

Scroll down to Fundamental Skills under degree requirements–under English Comp and under Math there is an exemption for SAT scores. I should specify that this is an exemption WITHOUT credit. This is in the COAS

Thanks, rrah, for the information and for the clarification.
