MA in Ind Eng to Management Analyst?

I have a question for anyone who has good advice ;).

I graduated w/ a degree in History, hoping to go to law school. Now that the legal field has been completely over-saturated with newly minted JD’s, I’ve decided to forgo that plan and pursue plan B…well actually there was no plan B so now I’m making a plan B and would like to know if it is feasible or not.

What I’d like to do is get into management consulting, and I’ve heard that one of the best ways into that field is through a degree in Industrial Engineering. However, I’m 24 right now and have had spotty employment for the past two years. I was considering completing 2 years of engineering prereqs in order to apply to the Masters program at my alma mater in Industrial Engineering. This would make me 28/29 when I graduate w/ that MA. Would a management consulting company consider me at that age, and w/ next to Zero work experience, but an MA in Ind Eng? All advice would be greatly appreciated.

well, your approach is very bad.

First, where did you go undergraduate school? For top management consulting firms, it matters a lot. Depending on where you graduated, your history degree might be just fine. Since you are not in school anymore and age 24, you will need to network your way in.

Industrial Engineering is a good field especially useful for operations strategy consulting which is similar to management consulting. However as I mentioned before, you can get into management consulting with any major. Going from a history undergrad to master’s in industrial engineering sounds like a lot of work for nothing.

Your best bet is to get a job that you enjoy, do very well, and apply to top MBA programs. You will have a much better shot with this approach if MC is your end goal.
