MA Psychology at NYU

Hey everyone! I have been accepted into NYU to do my masters in social and consumer psychology. Does anyone know if I can get a good job after this very expensive 2 year degree? I am an international student who wants to work in content development/consumer research/market research.

You should ask the career center/placement office at NYU about this. They often have statistics about this on their web site.

Can you get a get job after the MA? Sure! Completely depends on what you do during the MA - if you can snag a part-time job doing consumer research (or something related) during term-time and then a sweet summer internship in the field, you should be set. NPD and Nielsen are both headquartered in NYC and the surrounding area (NPD has a paid summer intern program - I did it one summer), and so is Experian Hitwise and probably some other, smaller consumer research/marketing firms.

Do you need to get an expensive NYU MA to go to work in consumer research and market research? Nope.

When I interned at NPD (with an MA in public health psychology), I met several bright young folks who began at the company entry-level with a bachelor’s degree. In fact, at the time I was more highly educated than several people in my division. They have this cool rotation program where you can work in several different divisions of the company to see what you liked best.

Now, it does seem that eventually you should get a graduate degree in order to ascend in companies that do market research. People with graduate degrees at NPD had degrees in everything - there was even a PhD in political science - but the most common degree seemed to be an MBA, especially at the management level. Plus, most market research analyst positions I’ve seen require a BA but prefer an advanced degree. It does seem like the NYU degree would be a decent choice for someone who wants to go that way, so I’m not saying that it’s a waste of money or anything. But, I think you should consider whether you can repay those loans if you are borrowing the full cost. NYU for 2 years is easily around $100-120K. Market research analysts average $60,000 a year.
