Macalester College Early Action / Early Decision for Fall 2025 Admission

The COA ended up being higher than expected

My twins were both accepted- they had contemplated ED but finanaces prevented them from going with ED. Still not sure we can swing it. $23k in aid. Majors computer science and linguistics. Offer was exactly same as estimated aid. They had submitted early financial aid review request in October when making a decision re ED. They loved campus vibe and tour in June.

I’m sorry. I think it might be worth keeping them on the table though, and see if you can get them to match other offers you might receive down the line.

Yeah, I’m not counting it out, as it’s one of my top choices, but we’ll definitely have to see if we can get the offer a bit lower

Does anyone know the different amounts associated with the various merit scholarships (I only know one of them)?

  • Catharine Lealtad Scholarship
  • DeWitt Wallace Scholarship
  • DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarship: $26,000 / year
  • Macalester Scholarship
  • National Merit Scholarship

I was awarded the DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarship for $20,000/year

The pie chart here is a little out of date—my C24 was offered a $25K DeWitt Wallace Distinguished Scholarship last year—but it gives a general sense of the ranges: Merit Scholarships - Macalester Financial Aid

Also description of some of the scholarships (but not amounts) here: https://www.macalester.edu/financial-aid/wp-content/uploads/sites/295/2022/06/22-23-Returning-Understanding-Your-Financial-Aid-Package.pdf

It seems that the Dewitt scholarships are not always a set amount. My son got $24k, his friend got $20k but they both said Dewitt

I am not sure if understood correctly but as best I could follow we were told that once financial aid department sorts out need based aid the scholarship amount and financial aid do not ever exceed each other. Student for example is determined to need 20k if they get 20k in Dewitt scholarship they get 0$ in need based. Or 15k in scholarship they would get 5k in need based. If they apply for external scholarships macalester must be notified and their Dewitt scholarship or need based aid will be reduced accordingly . Does this sound correct?

ED2 decisions are out as per IG! Congrats to all those who got accepted! :tada:
