Macaulay Honors College

I have a few questions about Macaulay that I wasn’t able to find answers for on the website.

  1. Can you finish early/enter early if you have enough college credits? I know that the accepting of AP and other college credits depends upon the college you’re in, but if you have enough, will they let you skip?
  2. How many students do they accept a year?
  3. Yes, this is more of a “chance me” question, but can I get in with a 2100 on my PSAT so far and a 95% or 3.9/4.0 GPA? Do they look a lot at ECs and class rank?
  4. Are all of the classes besides the special Macaulay seminars just standard CUNY classes?
  5. Is it easier to get into Macaulay at one college than another?
  6. Does Macaulay take your major into account when you apply to the college?
  7. Are all (and I mean ALL) costs covered?
  8. What tangible benefits (besides free tuition!) are there to going? Why should someone go there as opposed to another college if money is no object to them? (For me it definitely is.)
    Thanks!

1) You can complete college before 4years if you have enough college credits. However most students choose stay with their class as a community of scholars. That may mean that you can explore other opportunities such as e.g. having more than one major, participating in more internships, or studying abroad for a longer period of time than the average student.

We accept AP scores of 4 and 5 as college credit. These serve mostly as electives as against class exemptions.

2) Last year we accepted a little more than 1050 students (19% of our application pool)?

3) Academically eligible applicants to Macaulay Honors generally have a cumulative high school average of 90% (3.5 GPA) or higher. These students also have SAT scores (cumulative of the Math and Reading sections only) that range from 1250 to 1600 or ACT scores that range from 28 - 36. However, although high academic achievement is a requirement, a student who has excellent grades or scores will not be admitted to Macaulay Honors College solely on those grounds. All prospective students are reviewed for admission based on a holistic view of eligibility to the program. A student’s recommendations and essays which highlight co-curricular activities, community involvement, and leadership skills are key components of an application.

The average SAT score for an accepted student last year was 1420 (cumulative of the Math and Reading sections) and the mean High School average was 93.9%. [The mean ACT equivalent would be a 32, and the GPA equivalent would be a 3.85].

4) There are three types of classroom experiences:
• Macaulay seminars
• Honors Classes (with Macaulay students and students in other honors programs)
• Class for your major (with Macaulay students, honors students, and students in the general population of the school).

5) All Macaulay campuses are very selective and make decisions based on a very holistic review of a high achieving applicant. No campus is inherently easier to get into than another.

6) The Macaulay committee on each campus will assess skill set relative to the major you indicate interest in (if you make such an indication on the application).

7) We ONLY cover FULL tuition costs for 4 years for students who have attended a NY state high school. If you are an out-of-state student, you will have tuition costs of approximately $14000 per year. ALL other benefits apply equally to ALL accepted students:
• A state-of-the-art laptop
• A $7500 opportunities fund grant to support study abroad in every hemisphere and for you to engage in research
• New York City’s Cultural Passport, which gives free or discounted entry to hundreds of New York cultural institutions (museums, exhibits, Broadway Shows etc).
• Amazing connections to unpaid internships (career preparation) with leaders in government, business, science and the arts at New York’s finest firms and organizations.

8) Macaulay offers a personalized experience that is second to none, because each student has a personal advisor for fours that works with them to create the best possible opportunities and outcomes.
