Why do they have to discontinue the white MacBook? I was happy with it. Do you think the new MacBook Air will be an equivalent re[lacement? Or would you go for a MacBook Pro? I don’t do much on the computer. I don’t need fastest or biggest. I do like something simple.

The new 13" Macbook Airs come equipped with the best Intel processors out there in the market and are extremely powerful machines for their size, and are more powerful than the old white Macbooks. If you aren’t going to be doing anything that requires a lot of CPU usage, a Macbook Air will suffice and your back will thank you in the long run. You could get a much more powerful computer for the price of any Macbook Air, but I get that carrying around those ubiquitous aluminum laptops are somewhat of a social status indicator nowadays (like Blackberries in the East Coast). If you don’t really care about having a Mac or PC, I would recommend getting a more powerful Windows machine with a better warranty for the same price as an Air. If cost isn’t of much importance to you, then go ahead and get a Macbook Air, but be sure to get AppleCare as well (Apple’s warranty program; it’s pricey but comprehensive).

If you really had your heart set on those white Macbooks, you can probably find a refurbished one online somewhere.

I got a Mac Air for H few years ago. He had a lot of problem with wifi. He took it back to get it repaired a few times, but they weren’t able to fix it. They may have improved it since the first generation…

I have never used a PC. Even in the 80’s and early 90’s when no one was using an Apple and finding a compatible browser for apple was a job in itself. I don’t mind carrying around the weight but A MacBook Pro seems more power than I would ever need.

@oldfort They have. Three years or so, and two generations later, the MBA is very different now.

It’s gotten amazing reviews. Reviewers claim that Apple was even TOO humble on their claims for the battery life. Don’t come to a website like CC for a MBA review. Google it or use cnet.com or something…

I find CC review fits me better. CNET and others get too technical too fast. Anyways, MBA sounds great.

The new MacBook Air seems awesome. I have an older white plastic MacBook (about 3 years old) and it still runs like a charm. I can’t justify replacing it. The thing won’t die–LOL. I did upgrade the OSX to Lion yesterday and it easily handled the upgrade. If I were to replace it right now, I’d probably buy the new MacBook Air :).

^That’s what I have except it’s 4 years old. My screen keeps turning off. It’s probably simple to fix.

I noticed that MacBookAir does not have a cd/dvd drive. Would that be a problem?

I don’t think the lack of DVD drive would be a problem. A lot of people stream movies to watch. Programs and apps get downloaded from the app store. I suppose it’s something you’ll have to decide based on personal preference and need.

My daughter LOVES hers!

^^Does she have 11" or 13"?

as an aside for college students…the Air may not be the best for on-campus use where an Ethernet is required, i.e., most dorms since wireless can be spotty in cinder-block walls.

Iglooo,
DD has the 11 inch. She likes that it can fit in her large purses when traveling.
The only downside is: ‘there’s no disc drive, must buy separately. Not much use for it anyway, though’

Ordered it this morning. Just hope the screen doesn’t die before new arrives. I now see that this one is 5 and 1/2 years old. Served me well.

I like the macbook air a lot - however my macbook pro is going strong but it is only a 13" ( last one was 15"), I think an 11" would be much too small.

I compared the two at an Apple store. 11" was nice and portable. If being portable is important, 11" will work great while saving money. For me with my aging eyes, it got a little irritating. Prints are smaller. I ordered 13"

Good luck. Come back and post after you’ve played around with the new MacBook Air and give us your opinion on it. I think you made a good choice by ordering the 13 inch rather than the 11 inch.

We just bought one about 2 weeks ago. It’s fabulous. So light, great features, and well, all the beauty of a Mac.

The new Macbook Air’s can use a DVD drive from another computer wirelessly via DVD or CD Sharing. This feature of OS X lets you wirelessly “borrow” the optical drive of a nearby Mac or PC, or you can purchase a Superdrive for $79.00

^Sounds like a science fiction! Hopefully, it’s not too complicated. I use a cd/dvd drive once or twice a year. I don’t have to but some software I’d like to have a hard copy.

What is the best way to clean up the computer memory? I usually just tranfer the contents to the new computer not to deal with the transition. I discovered I still had Amazon Trail my kid used to play in the second(?) grade.
