I’m particularly interested in MacGregor as a place to live for the upcoming year but I haven’t really seen many people discussing actually living there. If someone could just go over life there in general as well as the personalities of different entries, that would be great.

Any pro/cons would be helpful. Also, I noticed that smoking is allowed in individual rooms. How prevelant is that? Do rooms smell of smoke from previous inhabitants or is it relatively uncommon?

I lived in MacGregor all four years, although I’ve been out long enough that I wouldn’t be comfortable stereotyping the current personality of the entries.

MacGregor has a great balance of community life and personal space – in the entries where I lived (A and D), it was common for people to have dinner together in the entry lounge, goof around and watch TV for a while, then go to their rooms for homework and bedtime. A lot of hanging around in the hallways not doing homework also ensued.
Where I lived, it was common for people to leave their doors open even when they were doing homework, so other people could drop by.

There’s a lot of variety in social experience between entries, even if you’re talking about social entries. When I lived in A-Entry, we were most likely to spend a Friday night with pizza or Chinese food and a movie in the entry lounge; when I lived in D-Entry, we were most likely to spend a Friday night with beer pong in a suite lounge. I liked both entries, although for somewhat different reasons.

For smoking to be allowed in individual rooms, the entire suite has to agree to allow it to happen. There were no smoking suites in either entry I lived in – it’s not that common for people to smoke in their rooms at all.

I really liked living in MacGregor, and I thought it was perfect for somebody like me, who likes being with friends and being social, but also likes to be able to be solitary sometimes.

Is that informative? I can answer specific questions, too. You can also search my past posts for “MacGregor” – I’m sure I’ve said some more insightful things on CC before. I also wrote a [blog entry](http://www.mitadmissions.org/topics/life/residential_life_housing_options/mit_dorms_macgregor_house.shtml) about MacGregor that shows some individual rooms and what people have chosen to do with them.
