Machu Picchu

I’m interested in first-hand information about visiting MP.

Considering a June trip, so I need to get busy with the planning, etc. Would certainly be willing to pay for a tour. Budget is about $5000 for 2 which would, hopefully, include air fare from East Coast. Have found a really wide range of prices online. Not interested in camping but would enjoy hiking, if it’s not uber-strenuous.

I take it you’re not interested in doing the Inca Trail then? Too bad, it’s a fantastic experience. Outside of the Inca Trail, which has to be booked months in advance with a company that handles the guides and supplies, going to Machu Picchu is an easy day trip from Aguas Calientes, which is a quick train ride from Cusco, Peru.

It is wonderful! Go! We took the train because I don’t camp. We arrived in Aguas Calientes in the late afternoon and spent the following day at Machu Picchu, then took the train back in the evening. We found that one day was enough for us to explore the site, though I think many people go for two. Make sure to spend some time in Cusco as well.

Make sure you also do a tour of the Sacred Valley - Machu Picchu isn’t the only Incan ruin around Cusco - the Sacred Valley tour is an all day trip around several of the others. Very highly recommended.

It’s an amazing place! I agree with the others - make sure you spend at least a day seeing the other sites in the Sacred Valley. If you like hiking but aren’t up for the Inca Trail, you might like hiking up Huayna Picchu. It is the mountain right behind MP that you see in all the classic pictures. It’s only an hour hike - kind of tough, but not really too bad at all. The view from the top looking down on MP is amazing. Have fun - it will be a great trip!

I was going to say - it looks somewhat strenous to me, but I was thinking of [Chichen Itza – World Heritage Site – National Geographic](Chichen Itza -- World Heritage Site -- National Geographic)

This sounds amazing.
