@Marilyn That makes me sad. I used to travel to San Diego regularly for business in the 90s and stay right at Horton Plaza. It was my first Nordstrom and my favorite shopping center in the whole country!
Those were announced a while ago. From past history, they will announce the further closings much later. And since it’s over 3 years, expect that they will be announced in bits and pieces.
95% of my shopping is done online. I rarely step foot into any Macy’s unless someone else in the family wants something. I like sales and their clearance racks take an entire day to peruse. It’s much easier to shop online and takes less time.
I’m laughing at you ladies buying clothes at Costco. I don’t shop there, but I sometimes go to BJs, which has, by and large, terrible clothes. However, they do sell pants that fit me perfectly and are ideal for my job, which is business casual. They are about $16 and last forever. Their tops are hideous though. I think I need to become a Costco Fashionista.
Why laugh when we buy Costco clothing that is a good price and fits us well? I’m frankly puzzled. Most of the Costco clothing i have lasts a very long time and is excellent quality. Their return policy is amazing — no tags or receipts required!
Sadly, they are phasing out of kids’ clothing according to a worker I spoke with yesterday. I guess not enough demand and profit in it.
A lot of their kids clothes are carters which you can buy in expensively in many places.
Maybe it is my Costco (only been a few times) but the clothing section seems very small with a very limited selection of items. I assume they are constantly rotating new stuff in so if you shop there frequently, over time you see more selection. Is that the norm?
Macy’s is in the same mall as most of the other department stores. Their shoe department has a dozen salespeople. I do buy shoes there. One reason I stay away is that it is always crowded with customers. Make up, jewelry—loads of salespeople.
Macy’s is just brighter, busier, & noisier than the other department stores. Some people I know seem to love bargain shopping there.
Our Costco has clothing in the center off the store laid out on lots of tables—maybe 16 plus sometimes some hanging racks plus maybe a row of underwear. At the CA and DC stores, there are even more tables—some in the front of the store as well as even more tables in the middle of the store, more hanging racks with jackets and coats as well.
@MomofWildChild - Horton Plaza was a great urban mall back in the day, but it has looked old and tired for many years and most stores have left. I remember when Nordstrom closed there a few years ago I knew it was the end.
The closest Macy’s to me closed over a year ago. It was messy, dirty and hardly anyone working there.
I like Dillard’s much better.
How does anyone buy shoes online?
We had two Macy’s just across the street from each other and one closed last year. Now Lord and Taylor in the same mall just closed and Papyrus is also closing.
Our Macy’s doesn’t have as much stock. Mostly I go there to pick up something I ordered online when I didn’t order enough to be shipped. It has been my goto store because of the good deals. I’ve gotten some nice things at great prices so if it were to close I would have to find a new default store.
I think shoes are easier to buy online than clothing. Zappos, Shoes.com and others provide free shipping and either free returns or exchanges.
For buying shoes online, I bought my mom like 2 dozen shoes in assorted styles and had her try them on and shipped back all the 22 that she didn’t fit and didn’t like. It was Zappos so free shipping both ways.
I didn’t like doing it this way but it was easier than trying to shop with her.
Costco is fine if all you need is casual wear. If you are looking for anything nicer…Costco is not your go to store (except maybe if they have a special purchase…but you can’t count on those).
I feel the same way about Kohl’s.
I’m not a good online shopper. I prefer to touch the fabrics and see the colors IRL. From where I live, it’s also a PITA to return things.
That being said, I go to the mall once every three or four years, and usually for a specific purpose. There are some smaller shops nearer to where I live that I prefer to use.
Luckily a friend encouraged me to come to NYC to shop for my MOB dress. It was a great day at the now gone LT flagship (where I bought the dress). We also went to Macy’s Herald Square…and both of us were pleasantly surprised with the organization of the store. Someone had done some serious redecorating!
Close the tiny underperforming Mall stores, but please leave that flagship store open!!
Around here…locally owned G Fox and CO, became Filenes (which my son fondly called felines), then became Macy’s. When it became Macy’s, a few years later, they split off the furniture and mens things to another store in the mall. I seldom go there…and can’t remember the last time I bought anything at Macy’s near me.
If you know your sizing for a particular brand and particular style, you can shop easily. I know that if I buy a 40 in JC or 9.5 in Brooks, I am set. I rarely send shoes back!
Zappos
I buy my tennis shoes online. But I am just replacing the same brand, style and size. I haven’t had good luck finding comfortable shoes online when I’m trying a new shoe.
I’ve had great experiences with Zappos.
Let’s say I’ve narrowed down my search to 2 styles of hiking boots. I’ll order an 8.5 & 9 in each style.
The purchase goes on my cc. I try the boots on at home, keep the pair I want, and slap a return label on the other three.
I get my refund quickly.
LOVE.
